Zurich takes scoring winger Polunin

Pure goal scorer Alexander Polunin will move his 5-9, 171-pound body from Russia to Zurich, Switzerland soon to play for the Lions. The Moscow native was the second player selected in the draft, behind Dominik Lakatos of London.

It was said before the draft that he can step into any lineup in the league tomorrow and on some teams, as a first-line winger. To play first-line minutes as a rookie with Zurich, Polunin will have to get past Jakub Voracek and T.J. Oshie on the right wing depth chart.

Perhaps the fastest skater available, he projects to be a goal scorer and good point producer. The only thing he lacks is size. Polunin is creative and has a flair that will make him a crowd favorite in Zurich.

For a lot of his time with the Lions, Polunin could be on a line with Brayden Point, a slick offensive center about the same size and age. It’s not hard to envision them growing up together in GM Dennis Sullo’s system.

Zurich dipped to just under 3 goals per game last season, the Lions’ lowest average since Season 1. Adding Polunin should get that statistic trending upward again.
