Milan squeezes in Ott, Vermette

Milan narrowly missed a computer pick, beating the buzzer on the last pick of Round 12 by less than 15 minutes. But everything turned out fine for GM jkellyAT, as he scooped up a pair of 29-year-old forwards in quick succession.

Pest Steve Ott will now wreak havoc along the left wing in Milan, while shifty Antoine Vermette joined the Guerriero one pick later. Vermette can play either center or left wing. Milan has steadily built a solid team, acquiring Dustin Brown in the now famous Landeskog trade and getting defensemen Dustin Byfuglien and Trevor Daley with picks acquired in trades. With today’s drafting of Ott, the Guerriero have the makings of a nasty line to play against. They could team Ott with Jordan Staal at center and Ryan Callahan on the other wing, and that still leaves teams having to contend with forwards Mike Richards, Matt Moulson and Brown, as well as Vermette and Viktor Stalberg. And packed away for the future is New York Ranger playoff hero Chris Kreider. On the blue line, Byfuglien and Daley are joined by defensive defenseman Brooks Orpik and two players who play well above their contracts in Andy McDonald (3 years at $550,000 per year) and Jason Garrison (1 year at $675,000). Antti Niemi, 28, is under contract to be Milan’s goalie for the next four years. Milan fans have to be feeling good about this season and Seinfeld fans are anxiously awaiting the first “Rochelle, Rochelle” trade that sends a player on a journey from Milan to Minsk.

Here is a look at who went today, with positions and ages in parentheses.
