Once the Season 9 draft started, it took new London GM Eric Smith exactly 51 seconds to make his first EURO League pick. The team with a new GM, new nickname and logo also has a new superstar in Dominik Lakatos.
The 18-year-old Czech is already third on the depth chart at right wing for the Ice Lords and should play right off the bat, and he’s guaranteed to play with a skilled center because London has a lot of them right now including Jeff Skinner, Artemy Panarin and Frenchman Gregory Beron.
Smith was poised to pick fourth in the draft, but when the lottery was held, his team moved up to the top spot. Some London fans worry that Lakatos will have trouble fitting in right away because there are no Czech players on the roster, but he does speak the universal language of goals and assists.
Here is what the EURO League Draft Guide had to say about Lakatos:
Amazing puck skills and smart play are Lakatos’ calling cards. It seems the puck is always connected to his stick when he is in tight quarters. Playing against men in the top Czech league, he scored at a pace of about 40 points per 80 games. Scouts say he seems very mature for his age and they compare his demeanor and playing style to that of Sean Monahan. Lakatos was drafted in the 6th round of the 2017 draft by the New York Rangers but said the EURO league is his first choice. A future perennial all-star; the kind of guy to build a franchise around.
