‘Business bits’ as draft gets going

  • Tuesday, March 19, 2013 –

First off, welcome to the EURO League to Fred Grondines, who takes over in Norway. Fred, thanks for joining. Please report to your team office at Jordalgata 12,  0657, Oslo, by 3 p.m., where our league secretary, Rose, will greet you and have you sign the ownership papers. You might want to bring along a translator.

Draft timer? Everyone has different schedules and for some reason, some GMs put their professional lives and family ahead of their EURO League lives. I can’t see why someone would do that, but some do nonetheless. And some members of this league live in Europe and are on completely different time zone schedules.

I am proposing a 4-hour time limit on draft picks starting Wednesday. Please see the survey I am about to post and weigh in if you would like to.

Also, technically we have a draft penalty from season 1 as part of our rules. We have had enough turnover since then to re-vote on it if there is a groundswell of desire to do so. See our league forum under “House Rules” for an explanation. The penalty was intended to speed along the initial, 26-round draft. It may not be necessary for a 3-round draft. If you feel the rule should be stricken from the books, send me a message. If 8 GMs or so call for a re-vote, then we will have a re-vote.

As for the owner’s payroll demands, it seems a lot of teams are getting squeezed by their owner. Trevor Grimm (Helsinki) has been in contact with Websim admins about it and they don’t seem to think it’s out of whack. Or perhaps there is a misunderstanding. Maybe we are talking apples and they think we’re talking oranges.

This matter may be an important one to many teams. The immediate questions as I see it are:

Is this a mistake due to our European city attributes or are the current levels what the admins envisioned?

Should we all live with current levels or ask/beg the admins to make our owners more generous?

We will continue the conversation with them a bit, but be aware there might be another survey coming on this topic. In the meantime, please read up on it.

I ran across these notes under the “Budget-Finance” section”: As a GM, you are not accountable for profits or deficits. However, the team owner will evaluate 3 aspects of your financial performance: maximize arena revenues, invest in finances and comply to the the proposed payroll budget.

How do we set the weighting of your payroll score?  The weighting of the payroll score is directly related with the difficulty to meet the owner’s budget. The difficulty is set by using the gap between your budget and your starting team payroll.

If your starting payroll is lower than your payroll budget, the weighting will be set to the minimum 20 points because the difficulty level is very easy (you already comply with the budget).

The harder it is to meet the budget, the higher the weighting will be.  A total of 80 points are shared between the Payroll score and Arena score.

All details on your Finance attribute can be found at page Budget – Finances of the team owner menu
