The team that Marty Sayle built – with a different goalie this time – is champion of the EURO League for the third time in five seasons.
Copenhagen won the Finals 4 games to 1 over Paris on Saturday with a 50-shot, 5-1 win at home in Game 5. The Tridents made their way to the Finals after conquering Amsterdam (4-2), London (4-1) and a difficult Dublin team (4-3) in the Northern Conference finals.
Simon Hjalmarsson was the main hero that day against Dublin with 2 goals for Copenhagen and he finished the playoffs as the team and league’s top goal scorer with 13 tallies in 23 games. The third-liner’s 24 points were fourth best in the league and only 2 points off what teammates Auston Matthews and Johnny Gaudreau scored to lead the league in playoff scoring.
While balanced lines has been the hallmark of the Sayle teams of recent seasons, the defense pair of Victor Hedman and K’Andre Miller did as much as anyone to earn Copenhagen the championship. Both were +20 in their 23 games, and that was 8 goals better than anyone else on the team.
The Tridents’ first 2 Cups – in Seasons 10 and 11 – came with Andres De La Garma in goal. This time, former Bern and Munich netminder Joonas Korpisalo had the job and his numbers (90.8 save percentage and 2.87 goals against) were in the top 4 of all playoff goalies.
When Sayle gets finished celebrating this Cup win, he will have to start worrying about a couple small, but important holes to patch for next year’s voyage. Korpisalo’s Type 2 contract is up as is second-line winger Boone Jenner’s Type 3 contract. If the team decides to keep Korpisalo – presumably at a higher salary – the pressure will be on the find an equal but less expensive Jenner. Sayle faced similar issues in the past, when he had to find replacements for Brandon Dubinsky and later for Cedric Paquette, and he’s obviously scored A’s on those tests.
