The teams have been named for the Season 13 All-Star which will be held this weekend in Zurich.
While Cup champion Berlin and defending regular season champ Helsinki led the way with 6 and 5 all-stars respectively, the biggest story out of the GM voting was that Copenhagen’s “second-line” right winger edged the Tridents’ top line RW in the voting. Jean-Gabriel Pageau (46 points this season and +25 at 17 minutes per game) topped all Northern Conference right wings in the voting and right behind him was Marko Dano (41 points, -6, 24 TOI). The closest race for a starting all-star position came at the other wing for the Northern Conference. Tomas Hertl of Oslo and Belfast’s Ondrej Palat both earned 47 voting points. (Votes were weighted: for example, a 1st place vote earned 5, points, a 2nd place vote earned 4, etc.) But Palat had more first place votes and was named starter by the commissioner. Minsk’s Aaron Ekblad led all defensemen in votes, while Berlin winger Vadim Shipachyov was the top vote-getter among forwards. Sixteen of the league’s 24 general managers submitted ballots.
Veteran defenseman Ken Kuusk of Paris was named captain of the Southern Conference team, and Tyler Seguin of Oslo is captain of the Northern Conference team.
Fans in the host city will have two Zurich Lions to cheer for in the game. Jacob Trouba finished third in Southern Conference voting on defense and left wing Alexander Polunin was second only to Lisbon’s Max Domi.
There are five players who were elevated to the team by the commissioner in order to get every team represented. Each bumped out a player who actually earned more votes.
The plan is to get the Skills Competition in today and actual all-star game played Sunday night.
Here are the Season 13 EURO League All-Stars. Players on the team are in black text, with the remainder of the voting totals shown in gray.
