Best Goalie honor too close to call

The Best Goalie Trophy in the EURO this season is likely to find its way to Scandinavia. Oslo’s Matt Murray and Helsinki’s Kari Ramo are putting up superhero statistics this season. Either would be a worthy choice.

Paris’ Philipp Grubauer should also get some attention, but his very good numbers aren’t at the same great level as Murray and Ramo’s.

So how do you pick from the two Northern Conference stars? They play on the top two teams in the league, so you know they get a lot of help from their teammates and their coaches’ systems. Helsinki allows the fewest shots per game in the league. Oslo ranks 8th in that category, so Murray is forced to make more saves. And he makes them. His 92.1 save percentage is tops in the league and equal with the all-time league record. Ramo and Grubauer both have save percentages of 91.5, which is good enough for a tie for second in that category.

Murray and Ramo have both played 67 games and Murray has one more win on his record. Ramo has one more loss. Murray has 8 shutouts and Ramo has 7. The only column where Ramo holds the edge is in the all-important goals against average. His 2.06 GAA is the highest this league has ever seen. Murray’s is 2.28.

It will all come down to what the GMs decide next week when Websim’s awards ballot comes out.
