Free Agency – Day 3

P.K. Subban, left, and Evander Kane during their NHL days. Both men signed lucrative contracts today in the EURO League.

“I like that I’ll be free to start trouble and not finish it,” a smiling P.K. Subban said after agreeing to a $9.85 million contract to play in Gothenburg this season.

The veteran defenseman who played for the Belfast Giants for 8 seasons and the Madrid Royals for two, is now the Frolunda’s premier defenseman. As it looks now, the blue line corps will also have Oscar Klefbom, Alejandro Hernandez and battlers Mark Fraser and Mikhail Pashnin. The latter two pray together before every game for the chance to punch an opponent and Subban has a knack for getting under the other team’s skin. This could be very entertaining.

Who is the EURO’s all-time leader in penalty minutues? Subban is. Fraser is third. But with Fraser and Pashnin on patrol, Subban should be able to spend more time concentrating on passing to people like Adam Henrique, Jordan Eberle and Petr Vrana. And if Subban can stay out of the box more, he could gain ground on Erik Karlsson, who is first all-time in blocked shots. Subban is second.

The last two seasons in Madrid, Subban scored more than 20 goals both years and he averaged 50.5 points in that time.

And while Madrid lost Subban this off season, they kept their best player. Left wing Evander Kane, tied for the league’s best OV rating (92) agreed to a long-term deal to the tune of $10.625 million. His anouncement to remain in Spain came a day after the Royals locked up Tyler Ennis. Look for Kane and Ennis to play together on the top line in Madrid. Kane, 30, is a five-time 30-goal scorer and he’s scored 29 twice. He has also had 90 or more takeaways in 6 of the last 7 seasons, so he is a hustler who can play defense.

Both Subban, a 4-time all-star, and Kane, a 3-time all-star, had other teams interested in their services this free agent period.
