Here’s a glance at what happened in Round 2 of the playoffs in the Northern Conference:
London 4. St. Petersburg 0
The Ice Lords maintained momentum from their first-round sweep of Copenhagen and surprised St. Petersburg in games 1 and 2 in Petrograd. The Ice Lords won by at least 2 goals in every game.
Stars of the Series
- Justin Schultz, London; 5 points from defense in 4 games, along with 6 blocked shots and 13 hits
- Jeff Skinner, London; 4 goals and 4 assists in 4 games; also blocked 4 shots
- Sergei Mozyakin, St. Petersburg; 8 blocked shots and had 7 hits to go with 2 goals in the 4 games.
Belfast 4, Minsk 1
The Hussars looked very strong at the end of the regular season and their hopes were high, but Belfast’s unending firepower exposed Minsk’s chief weakness: goaltending. It might have been a different story if Minsk could have afforded to keep Carey Price this season.
Stars of the Series
- Claude Giroux, Belfast; elite playmaker had 9 assists and 2 goals in 5 games. Had 19 shots on goal.
- Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Belfast; defenseman was +8 in good two-way performance: 14 shots, 4 points, 7 blocked shots and 8 hits
- Luke Adam, Minsk; one-time waiver pickup scored 3 goals and was +3 as a third-line winger.
