With the score 3-0 in favor of Belfast early in the Giants’ final regular season game Friday, Belfast was killing a penalty when Erik Karlsson poked the puck away from Gothenburg’s Adam Henrique and moved it up to captain Claude Giroux along the right boards. Their teammate Gabriel Landeskog sensed and opportunity and took off up the middle, between the two Frolunda point men and Giroux lay a saucer pass up ice and suddenly, the Swede was in on a shorthanded breakaway … looking for his 50th goal in the last game of the year.
Goalie Ben Scrivens looked feable on the wrist shot Landeskog let loose from about 13 feet out. Landeskog’s tally gave him 50 goals and 100 points.
John Tavares of Lisbon is the only other EURO player with a chance to score 50 goals this year. He is sitting on 47 with 3 games remaining.
