Berlin 5, Geneva 1 – The Geneva Generals played better Friday night against the Berlin Smurfs than they did the night before, but they still have to be glad to get a three-week break from the hot German team. Berlin defeated Geneva 4-1 and 5-1 in successive nights. Alexander Edler was the star of the game Friday, scoring a pair of goals and getting an assist from the blueline. His first goal was a shorthanded tally that tied the game 1-1 in the first period. He, partner Dion Phaneuf and forwards Loui Eriksson and Logan Couture were all plus 3 or better in the game. Geneva defenseman Karel Rachunek, who blocked 10 Berlin shots on Thursday, blocked two more on Friday. Jimmy Howard played goal in both games for Berlin, which is currently the top team in the Southern Conference.
Lisbon 7, Copenhagen 6 – Copenhagen General Manager Dylan Callow is spending his team’s off-day flying to and from Bratislava to see his younger brother Jack play his first EURO League game for Paris. Jack is a right wing, but he is penciled in as the center on the second line tonight in place of the injured Mikko Koivu. Joffrey Lupul and David Perron are his scheduled linemates. GM Callow’s team played a track meet at home Friday, getting nipped at the tape by visiting Lisbon. Neither goalie – Copenhagen’s Tim Thomas and Lisbon’s Karri Ramo – played well. Thirteen goals were scored in the contest and 11 players had 2-point games – 6 players for Lisbon and 5 for the Tridents. Two players scored 2 goals: Kevin Bieksa of Copenhagen and Brandon Bochenski of Lisbon. The difference in the game might have been in the penalties. Copenhagen played shorthanded about 5 and a half minutes, although they were able to successfully fend off Lisbon during a minute and a half of 5-on-3 play. Lisbon didn’t take a single penalty.
Madrid 6, Prague 2 – R.J. Umberger and Brooks Laich each had a goal and two assists as the Royals won easily in Prague. Sean Couturier, Derek Stepan and Gabriel Landeskog all had 2 points for Madrid, which had a 5-1 lead after two periods. Prague’s most successful player was Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who took one shot, scored on it, and added an assist.
Moscow 6, Edinburgh 5 (shootout) – A very close game had to be decided in a shootout, with Moscow’s Jaroslav Halak making one more save than the Caps’ Kari Lehtonen could. Both teams were 2 of 5 on powerplay chances, shots were 34-28 in favor of Moscow and hits were 34-25 in favor of Edinburgh. Claude Giroux of Edinburgh had 3 assists to lead all scorers, and his linemate Jamie Benn was the only player to score 2 goals. Five different players scored goals for Moscow. Edinburgh has an extra thing to worry about as the team travels home to prepare for Sunday’s game against Dublin. Namely, germs. Two players on the team – Gurkan Cetinkaya and Brandon Dubinsky – have the flu.
Bern 5, Milan 2 – Bern won its third straight game while Milan lost its third straight. Four of the game’s 7 goals were scored while one team had the man advantage, but one of those goals was a shorthanded tally by Milan forward Jaden Schwartz. His teammate Tyler Johnson opened the scoring about 9 and a half minutes into the game, but Bern was able to score four goals over the next 34 minutes to pull away. Brent Seabrook scored two goals for Bern, while teammates Andrei Kostitsyn and Mika Zibanejad had 3 points each. In the middle of the third period, things got very testy. Jamie McGinn of Milan and Bern’s Derek Dorsett had a spirited bout and then Milan rookie Par Arlbrandt received a match penalty for an elbow to the head of veteran Bear captain Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg lay on the ice for several minutes after the elbow and he was taken off the ice surface on a stretcher. Bern team officials somehow listed the injury as a leg injury, although most onlookers suspect he sustained a concussion. Either way, the 35-year-old who has only missed 3 games in his previous 4 seasons is expected to be out of action for 3 or 4 weeks. Danny Dekeyser of Milan was also injured in the game. Arlbrandt, taken fourth overall in this year’s draft, has 21 penalty minutes and 2 points in 17 games this season. Both he and Zetterberg are Swedes.
Minsk 5, Athens 2 – Minsk got out the gates faster, scoring the only two goals of the first period and the host Greeks could never tie them. Nicklas Backstrom and Thomas Powell combined for 13 shots on Athens’ goal and each ended the game with one point. Hussar defenseman Aaron Ekblad had 2 assists to lead all scorers. He and defense partner Kris Russell were plus 3 in the game, while T.J. Oshie of Athens was at the other end of the spectrum, finishing at minus 4.
