Three Questions
1. Luongo traded? What? Copenhagen fans, while quick to blame Roberto Luongo for the team’s failure to win the Cup despite placing among the top 4 teams every season, have to be shocked to see the goalie traded. Lou has played in all but 45 of the Tridents’ games in their three-year history. True, he is 35 years old now, but he has been as much a fixture in Denmark as pastries and the Great Dane dog breed. Brian Elliott, the 29-year-old who Copenhagen got in the straight-up trade for Luongo, might get more scrutiny than other player in the league this season.
2. More penalty killing practice in the offing? Copenhagen GM Dylan Callow has always hated when his team takes penalties and they took more last year than they did in either of the previous seasons. The guy who accumulated the most PIMs last season, Colin Greening (95 PIM), was promptly traded out of town this off season. To compound the problem of having the penalty killers on the ice more often, the shorthanded units’ efficiency numbers dipped a little last season, going from best in the league in Season 2 to 11th best in Season 3.
3. Cap concerns? That damn league salary cap is a thorn in the side for Callow again this season. The Tridents are about $2 million below it right now with regulars Matt Moulson and Ville Peltonen still left to sign. That might have been part of the motivation for the Luongo trade. (Update: Neither Moulson nor Peltonen was resigned by Copenhagen on Monday, when Step 16 occurred.)
