Prospects without attributes were shunned in two of the last three picks of the draft.
Berlin, which couldn’t pick any more prospects, took the guy Copenhagen was hoping to grab when they selected Carl Soderberg, a big, Swedish center who can score points. But he will find it hard getting playing time in Smurfland with the likes of Logan Couture, Nathan Horton, David Krejci, Nick Bonino, Josh Holden and Alesander Barkov also playing that position for Berlin. Soderberg’s strength and passing ability might come in handy if the Smurfs get hit with injuries, however.
Copenhagen’s Plan B selection was Paul Byron, a little, 24-year-old Canadian center who will probably not get ice time this season. He may be needed in just a couple of seasons because the four men ahead of him on the Trident depth chart are all 31 years old. Copenhagen did not take a prospect without attributes in this draft, but they have two in the organization: defenseman Nikita Zadorov and forward Nick Petan. Copenhagen’s only other pick in this draft as Nick Holden, taken in Round 1.
Thatcher Demko joins the Ethan Moreau Club as the last player taken in the draft. Paris took him at about 11 a.m. EST. Moreau was the 24th player taken in the 26th round of the initial draft. He was drafted by Milan but ended up playing 18 games for Bern, scoring 2 goals and adding one assist. The last player taken in the Season 2 draft was Scott Glennie (Bern) and the last guy picked in the Season 3 draft was the aforementioned Petan (Copenhagen). Neither has his WSH attributes yet. Demko, taken by Paris, is a goalie in the Vancouver system who played 24 games for Boston College last year, putting up a 91.9 save percentage. He is the second goalie taken by GM Ralph Booth this draft. Philipp Grubauer was picked at the end of the first round and both Grubauer and Demko will be competing with Zach Fucale (taken in the second round last season) for the right to replace Tuukka Rask some day.
