In the battle for all the marbles, the Geneva Generals have one. The opening game of the first-ever Euro Cup finals was a cautious one, with only 5 minor penalties being called. After a scoreless first period, the Generals opened it up with two goals, one when Chris Kunitz batted in a rebound and the other when Raffi Torres topped off a nice passing play involving David Desharnais and Justin Williams. Kari Lehtonen had about 25 saves under his belt before he finally allowed a Copenhagen goal with less than 6 minutes to play. Kevin Shattenkirk one-timed a D-to-D pass from Andrej Meszaros to bring the Tridents within one goal, but they could not get the goal that would have forced an overtime. Lehtonen ended up making 29 saves, while his opponent at the other end, Roberto Luongo, made 35 saves. A sold-out Geneva arena of 15,500 fans drummed up $1.4 million for the franchise. The Tridents will be trying to silence the crowd in Game 2 and could use more unselfish play like the kind Meszaros, Alex Goligoski and forward Derek Roy exhibited Thursday. Each blocked 3 shots. Three other players blocked 2 apiece. On the offensive side, Dany Heatly was the most active Trident, getting off 5 shots on Lehtonen. The sharpest thorn in the Tridents side Thursday was, as he always seems to be, Marian Gaborik, who let loose 6 shots on Luongo although he didn’t record a point in 26 minutes of play. Patrick Marleau, who earned an assist on the first goal of the series, had 5 shots.
