Selanne goal sends Geneva into Finals

Geneva goes through to the finals, but barely. Trailing 1-0 more than halfway into the third period, Geneva came through with two goals on Munich’s Jonathan Quick and they will now face Copenhagen for the EURO Cup. Quick stopped 17 shots through the first two periods to keep the Generals off the board and Milan Hejduk scored in the second to give Fox fans high hopes. But with 6:24 to go, Nick Foligno tipped a point shot by Mike Weaver and tied the game. Selanne passed the puck to Weaver on the play and earned an assist. His real heroics came with just 1:40 remaining and the possibility of overtime in Game 7 looming. Selanne took a pass from Mike Fisher, slipped past recently called up Munich defenseman Mike Commodore, and snapped a wrist shot to beat Quick on the blocker side. Munich pulled Quick for an extra attacker, but goalie Kari Lehtonen and the Generals held on for the win before 15,500 jubilant Swiss fans. Geneva outshot Munich 29-23 in the game with Selanne and Foligno leading the charge with 4 shots and 2 points each. Steve Downie had four shots for Munich, with Dan Boyle and Joe Thornton picking up assists on Hejduk’s goal. The Finals will start March 15 (websim time) in Geneva and the Generals will have the services of Nicklas Lidstrom, who has recovered remarkably well from his Game 6 injury. Ryan Malone will not be ready to play for Geneva, while Fyodor Tyutin remains out for the Tridents.
