Copenhagen wins; prepares for Cup final

The Copenhagen Tridents are in. On the brink of elimination for three straight games, Copenhagen survived to be the Northern Conference champion. The Danish team dominated the first half of the game and were up 5-0 early in the third period. Dublin tried to come back but their three goals weren’t enough to extend the underdog Irish’s Cinderella season. Copenhagen flirted with disaster by taking a lot of penalties, but their offense was in high gear, piling up 45 shots against Tim Thomas of the Fighting Irish. Five different players scored for Copenhagen in front of 17,402 loyal Trident fans. Scoring for the winners were Jamie Langenbrunner (his 7th of the playoffs), Andrej Meszaros (3rd), Joni Pitkanen (2nd), Kevin Shattenkirk (6th) and Teddy Purcell (5th). Stephen Weiss had 3 assists and Dany Heatley had 2 and they joined Purcell to be plus 3 as a line. Meszaros led everyone in hits with 6. For Dublin, which had James Wisniewski back in the lineup despite an injury, the problem Sunday was the defensive work of the top forward line of Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel and Bobby Ryan. They were minus 4, although Kessel earned one the Irish’s three goals. Nick Schultz and third-line center Olli Jokinen scored the other goals. Dublin won games 2, 3 and 4 but then lost the last three games of the series. Copenhagen will be healthy for the finals except for Fyodor Tyutin, the Russian defenseman who hurt a shoulder after 16 minutes of playing time in Game 6. Copenhagen inserted American Keith Ballard into the defense for Game 7 and also coaxed Swedish veteran Henrik Tallinder to sign with the team. Tallinder last played in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils.
