Round 2: Milan/Munich

Quick Glance:

Munich comes into this series with mythical god status for their nearly unblemished record over the last 30 games. The Red Bulls finished the regular season in the Top 5 in the four measurements of shots and goals (both for and against), which bolsters the claim that they really have a colossal machine chugging along there in Bavaria. And Milan could be exhausted after their multi-week battle with Kosice. Guerriero goalie Martin Jones did not look sharp in Round 1 and he will need to somehow regain the form that once won him the Best Goalie Trophy, although at age 37, that smacks of very wishful thinking.

Goalies: (in playoffs):

  • Milan – Martin Jones, 3.71 GAA, .869 save pct.
  • Munich – Alex Nedeljkovic, 2.77 GAA, .901 save pct.

Top Plus/Minus players (in playoffs):

  • Milan – Justin Barron, +5
  • Munich – Cale Makar, +8

Expert Panel Predictions:

  • Commissioner Chuck: Munich in 4 games. The Red Bulls have been amazing since Feb. 4. Just amazing. They are 28-1 in their last 29 games. I can’t see Milan being able to beat them. There’s really not much else to say, but I will continue just to fill up some lines. In the first round, the centers of the Red Bulls’ top 3 forward lines all had at least 6 points in the 5 games. And Cale Makar really picked up his game with 4 goals and 2 assists in the series. OK, now I feel like I’m piling on.
  • Rose: Milan in 6 games. Anybody here remember the U.S. Olympic hockey team in 1980? Or how about Leicester’s Premier League title in 2016. How about Bryan Camara’s surprising win in the Sock Puppet Show this last All-Star weekend? The point is upsets happen in sports. That’s why we watch the games. Munich is wrong if they think Milan will be an easy win for them. The Guerriero have guts and firepower in players like Matthew Tkachuk, Pavel Mintyukov, Evan Bouchard, Alex Tuch, Robby Fabbri and so many more. If you have kind of forgotten about these players for a while, don’t worry. You will be reminded of them often in the next week and half.
