12 Records set in Season 18

Season 18 was like no other in EURO League history with a total of 12 team and player accomplishments – at both ends of the spectrum – making their way into the record book.

Anton Lundell (left) and Jean-Gabriel Pageau of Copenhagen both beat the existing plus/minus record.

Munich finished the season with an astounding 24 straight victories but as impressive as that is, they only won the regular season title by a point over Copenhagen. Helsinki finished third in the league standings, but you have to wonder why.

The Jokerit and top center Connor McDavid set eight league records this season. In doing so, they displaced Minsk atop two important stats records (Most Shots per Game and Fewest Shots Allowed per Game).

Here’s a good example of how good the top teams played this year: Copenhagen came one goal short of tying the league record for most goals in a season. The record was set in Season 10 by Belfast and tied two seasons later by Helsinki and four seasons after that by Berlin. But two teams scored even more goals than the Tridents did this season. Munich blew past the old record of 349 goals by scoring 356 times. Hah!, said Helsinki. The Jokerits poured in 49 more than that to claim the new record of 405 goals. That’s 4.94 goals per game.

McDavid set five individual records.

Goalie Matt Murray of Copenhagen had one of the best seasons a goalie has had in league history. He set the record for most shutouts in a season and came close to records for goals against average (GAA) and save percentage. At the very end of the season, his league-leading .919 save pct. was bettered by Alex Nedeljkovic of Munich, who posted a .920 save pct. The EURO record is .921, set by Hall of Famer Jimmy Howard in Season 8, when he was with Athens.
