In a massive surprise, Lisbon General Manager Bryan Camara upset Prague’s Peter Ott and every other EURO League GM to carry away the title in the inaugural Sock Puppet Show Competition during All-Star Weekend.
Camara’s 4-minute story was about a hairy woman who was given confidence and self-worth in a chance encounter with a powerful, wise man. Reviews were overwhelmingly positive.
“I was incredibly moved by Bryan’s direction of ‘Diary of a Hairy Woman,’ said Belfast GM Svein Haugsmoen. “I admit I cried in two scenes. Three, if I’m being honest.”
“The production was a truly touching and heart-warming experience, delivering a story that felt both deeply personal and universally resonant,” commented Bern chief Shalom Connell.
“The clever writing and seamless execution made for an unforgettable evening of theatre,” said Jason Haupt, who directs Gothenburg.
But not everyone was moved by “Diary.”
“Still looking for cheerleaders. Where were they? I have plenty of extra cheerleader sock puppets I could have lent him for the weekend,” said Guybrush Threepwood. “All he had to do was ask and give my a little time to get them washed.”
Peter Ott, the most experienced sock puppet artist in the league, said he found the production shallow and lacking in a real message.
“I can see why Bryan won and it was a bit of a cheap trick,” Ott said. “Still, naming the characters Rose and Sepp Blatter was a clever move.”
