EURO general managers will have quite a decision to make at the end of the year in deciding which player gets the coveted Rookie of the Year trophy.
We don’t remember any year with so many quality candidates. It will probably boil down to who Websim’s system places at the top of the five-player candidates list. Whoever is at the top of the list will get what is probably an unfair advantage.
Here are some brief comments about this season’s best rookies:
Forwards
Three players are fighting each other for the rookie scoring lead and two others have a chance of making the list of nominees. Dominic Canic, a Croatian center with Milan, seems to have the edge with less than 20 games to play. He has played substantially less per game than Edinburgh’s Albert Sjoberg and Zurich’s Kieran Brown (pictured) and he’s a +26 player with the Guerriero. But plus/minus is as much a team stat as an individual stat. Likewise, he plays center, so it’s unfair to compare his great turnover ratio to those of the wingers in the running with him. Centers do better in that stat column. Matty Beniers, a center for Geneva, has a little better defensive stats than Canic does, but he doesn’t have enough points to catch the top 3. Sjoberg leads all rookies in shots taken and in takeaways and he is tied with Beniers for the shots blocked lead. Both have yet to sit in a penalty box. And to make the choice even less clear, the top rookie goal scorer in the league is the Lions’ Brown, with 13.
Defensemen
Thirteen rookie defensemen have played at least 30 games this season. That’s a lot.
Bern’s Timothy Liljegren has the most goals, assists and points. Danilo Tomasevic of Gothenburg has the best defensive stats. Those two are the best in a big, crowded field, with Tomasevic’s teammate Rasmus Sandin and Edinburgh’s Jamie Drysdale close enough to pass them on the list before the end of the season. Amsterdam’s Owen Power missed more than 20 games, but he would have been in the conversation if he had 66 games played.
Goalies
On Friday, Hanover’s Carl Lindbom stopped 35 shots as the Scorpions beat powerful Helsinki 4-2. It wasn’t his first good game of the season. He has 23 wins and 1 shutout this season with a 3.46 goals against average (20th best in the league among goalies with 25 games played) and a save percentage of 88.5 (24th).
