The roof was raised in Amsterdam’s arena when Patrik Laine of the hometown Ajax blistered a slapshot that won the Hardest Shot competition in the Season 14 EURO All-Stars Skills Competition Saturday. Those fans haven’t seen a lot of hockey – this being their first season in the league – but Laine’s win was their first little championship to celebrate. Ajax General Manager Ben Stuller was thrilled – giddy in fact – and offered to give his favorite hat to anyone who could explain what an Ajax is.

Laine has now won the event three straight times. He won it the two previous seasons when the team was based in St. Petersburg. Oslo’s Zach Werenski placed second, just as he did last year.

The Fastest Skater event featured 24 players including nine who competed in the event last year too. Two of those nine didn’t do well last season, but they did great this year. Reto Suri of London won the event and Maxim Chudinov finished right behind him. Clayton Keller of Munich was third.

Keller’s Red Bulls teammate, defenseman Cale Makar was magical in the Accurate Shot event. He was quick and nearly perfect and was they only one who did better than Connor McDavid of Oslo, who improved from his third place last season to second this year. McDavid was champion in Season 10.
