History is expected to be made tonight (Oct. 29 in Websim time) when Sarah Nurse takes the ice for Stockholm.
Stockholm General Manager Delwin Y, whose team is currently in 20th place in the 24-team league, announced the roster move this morning.
Nurse, whose cousin Darnell plays for Hanover, gets a baptism of fire because she’s going up against the league’s current No. 1 team when Dublin pays a visit. On faceoffs, she will line up against American Brandon Saad of the Guinness Chuggers.
Darnell has issued a league-wide e-mail warning Saad and all players who check his cousin too hard that they will have to deal with him in future encounters.
“Sarah can take care of herself and I’m not asking guys to take it easy on her, but you know … things happen,” Darnell said, despite urgings of his GM Brett Warbeck to remain quiet on the issue.
Nurse, who was a member of Canada’s national and Olympic teams, has a history of battling American women, but today she will have to work with two Americans who will be her linemates: Patrick Kane and J.T. Miller.
“I will have their backs, I assure you,” Nurse said. “I just want to play the best I can and help Stockholm win. The ‘being the first women’ thing is not important to me today. I will make a bigger deal of it when we beat Berlin later this year.”
Kane seemed anxious to play with Nurse and inadvertently put his foot in his mouth when he joked about it by reporters.
“I’ve had luck with American women. Let’s see if I can do the same with a Canadian chick,” American Patrick Kane said, immediately drawing the ire of feminist groups across the globe. All might be forgiven if Kane can set Nurse up for a goal against Mackenzie Blackwood, who is penciled in as the starting goalie for Dublin tonight.
