Three Questions
- Those guys are tough aren’t they? London’s previous general manager placed a lot of stock in the physical part of the game. Acquiring and playing players like Zac Rinaldo, Milan Lucic, Mikhail Pashnin and Daniel Fernholm will build some fan interest but we’re no so sure it will win games. That said, London almost knocked Copenhagen out of the playoffs in the first round last season. The new GM of this team will have to make sure Coach Paul Maurice practices penalty killing because there will be a lot of London penalties this year. The team was second in the league last season and it looks like they are loaded to challenge for the league record in PIMs.
- How good is this Lakatos kid? Dominik Lakatos has three seasons averaging 85 points behind him now and he is just 21. That should tell you he has a very good chance of being one of the best in league history. He won’t be the fastest player on the ice and he certainly isn’t a big guy, but he has great puck skills and hockey sense. On top of that, Lakatos is becoming a cunning defensive forward. He’s not the only skilled player to look out for when you’re going against London, though. Alexander Radulov is the top scorer and most dangerous offensive threat on the team and Nardo Nagtzaam isn’t a household name, but he is an excellent faceoff winner and he has been steadily improving in this league. After three seasons as a fourth-liner in Belfast, he burst on the scene with Madrid, scoring 32 goals in just 15 minutes of ice time per game. Two years after that, Nagtzaam was in London, reaching a career high in points (73) and building his lifetime turnover ratio to +42.
- How are they on defense? Martin Jones is in his prime and has been very good as the starter in London, especially the last three seasons when his goals against average has been around 2.80 and his save percentage was between 90.7 and 91. Those are good numbers. The defense in front of him will excel at clearing the crease area so Jones can see shots. Brenden Dillon, Daniel Fernholm and Luke Schenn are big, mobile dudes. Keep you head up with them on the ice. Marc-Andre Bourdon and Mikhail Pashnin should top 100 minutes in penalties while making it very difficult for opposing forwards to set up shop in the London zone. Russian Ilya Nikulin is a capable offensive player who led the team’s defensemen in goals (18) and points (42) last season.
