Three Questions

1. What happened in Season 11 to Lisbon HC? You don’t often see a team drop 47 points and go from 7th to 24th place in one season, but that’s what happened to our Portuguese friends last season. It was as if Coach Willie Desjardins and superstars John Tavares and Steven Stamkos decided to take a year off. They were seen at the beach Praia de Sao Pedro do Estoril more than they were seen in the rink. Tavares, 31 at the time, played 29 minutes per game and his point production dropped from 129 to 65. He scored 55 goals in Season 10 and just 15 last season. He was a -66 player. Stamkos was -59 and for the first time in his career, scored fewer than 33 goals (he had 23). But General Manager Bryan Camara, dressed in a super hero costume, has flown in to save the day. He turned the team over and started doing chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, trying to save it. He booted Desjardins and coaxed Barry Trotz to coach, rattled off three trades, signed a few free agents, and used his 24th place in the standings to devour the waiver wire, claiming 6 players. This Lisbon team already looks a lot different.

2. Will Tavares and Stamkos be demoted? They won’t be. You know why? Because they are Tavares and Stamkos, that’s why. The 32-year-olds are still superstars capable of hitting the 100-point mark this season, even though they were terrible by their standards last season. Lisbon scored fewer goals than anyone last year and Tavares and Stamkos should accept most of the blame. Max Domi will again start on their left side. Should things seem like a recreation of the last season, be prepared for Coach Barry Trotz to shuffle the deck. Behind Tavares on the depth chart are two high-offense younger players in Sean Monahan and Mathew Barzal. Either of those two could play next to Stamkos if they had to, but the real point is Lisbon can place Tavares, Monahan and Barzal as centers on three lines! That will make the Portuguese tougher to contain for sure. The wingers aren’t as good as those centers, but the waiver wire was good to Camara and he reshaped the team with trades. This GM is not rebuilding through the draft. He wants results now.

3. Can they stop the other teams? Not with Carey Price wearing an HC Porto jersey, they won’t. Camara traded for Price in the off season but he is having trouble getting his $10 million contract into the lineup. Right now, Price is on the farm club and the team’s goalies are Michael Hutchinson and Alex Stalock. Our guess is the GM will think about waiving some players to get Price into the lineup. The Canadian won two Cups with Minsk and last season, he was the main man for Helsinki when they took the President’s Trophy as the best regular season team. The blueline is again led by dependable Drew Doughty and Sami Vatanen. Doughty has been with the franchise since he was the 38th player taken in the initial league draft. From Season 2 on, he has scored at least 10 goals and 40 points. Last season, he had 14 goals and 41 points. Vatanen was drafted by Lisbon and has been a regular for 8 seasons coming into Season 12. He is a smooth player who had a positive turnover ratio the last two years. Lisbon has 3 new defensemen in the lineup in Erik Gudbranson, T.J. Brodie and rookie John Marino. Management is hoping a change in chemistry throughout most of the lineup will change the collective mindset in Lisbon and start the team climbing the league ladder right away.
