Bern signs league legend Rask; Bratislava lands Faulk

Carey Price has won more games than Tuukka Rask has, but no other goalie in EURO League history has. Rask took a year off last year after being dropped by his only club – the Paris Rouge Eiffels – and he came back as a Bern Interrail Friday, signing a contract for $4.2 million. He will be the number one guy in Bern and he brings a stellar 2.87 lifetime goals against average along with a 90.0 save percentage. Who will back up the 35-year-old Finn is a good question. The Interrail still have fellow Finn Antti Niemi as well as Australian Charles Smart, who mixed some poor showings with some surprisingly good performances as a backup including three shutouts in his first six games in the league.

Defenseman Justin Faulk and his distinctive gotee have appeared in three Belfast Giants team photos with the EURO Cup, and Bratislava signed him Friday hoping he will be in another. He brings a top-level game with a lot of speed. He sometimes takes penalties he shouldn’t, but when it comes to defensemen is one of the best puck movers and passers in the league. He scored 39 points last year with the Giants, a season after achieving a personal-best 53 points. He came at a hefty price: $7.72 million. In Bratislava, he and fellow newcomer Ryan McDonagh will make up the top defense pairing. They were longtime rivals at Belfast and Minsk, and McDonagh took the jersey number they have both always worn, but Coach Lindy Ruff hopes they get along personally because in hockey matters, he thinks they will make a good duo with a total of five EURO Cups in their background.

In other signings today, Moscow resigned defenseman Jakub Krejcik, Gothenburg resigned forward Olli Palola, and Madrid resigned forward Tomas Nosek.
