The two-time defending champs from Copenhagen are among the first teams to make moves to shore up their lineups as the EURO League heads into Season 12.
Boone Jenner, a 29-year-old with no glaring weakenesses in his game, is the man Tridents GM Martin Sayle had his heart set on and he got him in a trade with Moscow. Sayle really wanted him, giving up promising defenseman Thomas Chabot, a first round pick and a third-rounder that was used to select Morgan Geekie. It’s likely the first round pick will be low in the draft because nearly all of the pre-Jenner lineup in Copenhagen should be back.
The first free agents to sign for new teams are Jack Callow and Charlie Coyle, two forwards who were not on any team’s roster in Season 11. Callow and Coyle have other similarities. Both are 30, have high hockey sense attributes and they both have positive turnover ratios in their career.
Callow has only played for powerhouse teams – in Paris and Copenhagen – and now he is a Minsk Hussar. A slick playmaker, the Canadian signed a long-term deal with Igor Kirunov’s club. His top season was 10 goals and 34 points playing 8 minutes per game.
Coyle, an American with good size, played 9 seasons for 5 different teams – Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Zurich and Bern. Helsinki, who finished the regular season as the top team in the league, signed him to a long-term deal. Coyle only topped 30 points in one season, and that was in Season 9 when he spent 3 games with the Lions before being traded to Bern. He came through with 22 goas and 26 assists that year.
Of the players who were on teams last season, only a few players have had offers sent their way during the first 24 hours of free agency. The general impression among GMs is that if they wait, salary demands will come way down in the next step. Defensemen Zach Bogosian, Justin Faulk and Ryan McDonagh, as well as center Ryan Johansen are all said to be considering more than one contract offer and all of them could make their decisions as early as Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET.
Any Type 3 player signed in this step receives a No Movement Clause, meaning they are locked into their new team’s pro/scratch lineup for the whole season.
