Site, coaches picked for Season 11 All-Star Game

Mats Zuccarello Aasen has 4 goals and 9 assists through 25 games for Zurich. And although he has 14 takeaways versus only 4 giveaways, he probably won’t have statistics good enough to get picked to the Southern Conference All-Star Team in a couple of weeks.

That’s a bummer. The Season 11 All-Star Game will be played in Oslo, Norway, which just happens to be Zuccarello’s birthplace. No other Norwegian has had as successful of a career in the NHL and to hockey fans in that country, Mats is a national treasure. The commissioner of the EURO is such a good-hearted, all-seeing romantic that he might just name Zuccarello to the team regardless of the votes.

The game will be played outdoors before an expected crowd of 28,000 at Ullevaal Stadium, which opened as a football stadium in 1926. It will be the all-star game’s second trip outdoors; the first was in Season 5 when Helsinki hosted the event and the Southern Conference won for the first time. Typically, the air in Olso is about 8 degrees Celsius (47 Farenheit) that time of year and most importantly, there will be plenty of good beer, including Ringnes (now brewed by Carlsberg) and Hansa.

A league committee of one has also named the coaches for the game. It was a gutsy call because the committee chose not to select popular Oslo-born actor Kristofer Hivju (above), best known for playing Tormund Giantsbane in Games of Thrones.

Instead, the committee went with two other Norwegians: current NATO Secretary General and former Prime Minister of Norway Jens Stoltenberg and as well as the current world chess champion Magnus Carlsen. Try matching lines with him for a full 60 minutes. Stoltenberg will coach the Northern Conference but said he might not play any players from Moscow, St. Petersburg and maybe Minsk.
