Three Questions

1. Are the Generals one of the Cup favorites? Not quite yet, in our view. If Frederik Andersen was still their goalie, we would say you should seriously consider calling that guy you know in Las Vegas and putting some money on them. But even without Andersen, this club is stocked from head to toe with solid players. The lowest OV rating in the whole lineup is 73, which is quite respectable and sported by Brandon Carlo, their 6-5, 23-year-old defenseman with a bright future. The lineup features a lot of speed, puckhandling ability and hockey sense. Bobby Ryan was a key player in the Generals’ excellent Season 9 performance and he and linemates Nazem Kadri and David Perron will carry their confidence into another season, although trade acquisition James Neal looks to be replacing Perron on the top line. Kadri, by the way, is one of the league’s most underrated players. Since coming to Geneva in a trade with Belfast in Season 6, he has led the team in scoring each year. Perron joins Dylan Larkin and free agent pickup Mike Richards on the second line, with a solid third line being formed by Riley Sheahan, Valeri Nichushkin and Bud Holloway. We expect very good plus-minus ratings from those three guys. And when your fourth line is Victor Rask, Connor Brown and Rickard Rakell, you know you’ve done something very right during the team-building process.

2. Are fans upset that Coach Sutter left? Last year’s coach Brent Sutter did an excellent job of driving the Generals uphill. He was really smart to take his second-leading scorer from the season before and demote him to just 10 minutes per game. Alexei Kalyuzhny had just come off his best-ever goal scoring campaign (21 goals) and he scored 57 points. But he was 35 years old and Sutter wisely didn’t push Kalyuzhny too hard. That move turned out really well. Riley Sheahan filled Kalyuzhny’s spot and scored 29 goals and 60 points. Fans are hoping new coach Mike Babcock can make similarly prudent decisions this year. The Sutter-to-Babcock change isn’t the only one that could affect what seemed to be winning chemistry in Geneva. Two-thirds of the starting defense – that’s four veterans – have left. So have three starting forwards. The starting goalie is new. Geneva’s fans fell in love with the Generals last year, but this year’s Generals will have to put on their best clothes, comb their hair, buy a nice bouquet and start a brand new courtship with the fans.

3. Where will most Geneva fans’ eyes be focused? At the beginning of the season, most of the focus will be on the players behind the forward lines. With so many new faces on defense and in goal, fans will be anxious and interested in seeing how they perform. Ondrej Pavelec is certainly a step down from Frederik Andersen, but let’s see what the guy does before declaring him miserable. Generals fans remember that he was the backup for their club from Season 4 through Season 6 and in his last Geneva year, his goals against average was 2.82 with a stellar 90.9 save percentage. In the years since they last saw him, he worked as the starter in Prague and he celebrated enough birthdays to become 33 years old. The new defense is in general, a big puck-moving machine. There will be the occasional defensive gaffes back there for Pavelec to deal with, but once they gain possession, players like Colton Parayko, Eric Gelinas, Jack Johnson, Patrick Wiercioch and Jamie McBain are all capable of stinging the opposition with their passing and shooting. Fans and coaches will also have their eyes on a less tangible aspect of the team. There aren’t many guys on this team who will take charge in the dressing room and on the bench. Valeri Nichushkin, with six years of service to the team, was given the captaincy at age 25. Leadership could be an issue for this Swiss club.
