Three Questions
1.Moscow’s not exactly your average team, is it? Actually it is. If you look at the team stats from last season the Dynamo ranked in the middle of the pack in almost every category. They were 7th best in penalty killing, but they ranked between 10th and 16th in all other team stats, including points in the standings (11th overall). Their leading scorer was David Backes, who scored 21 goals and 63 points to rank him 62nd in the league. Again, pretty average. One person who isn’t average is goaltender Alexander Salak, a 28-year-old Czech who ranked fourth in the league in both save percentage (91.7) and goals against (2.47). Salak is on his final year of a Type 2 contract and observers expect that a year from now, General Manager David Reichel will make resigning the goalie his top priority.
2. What can we expect to see from the Dynamo this season? We can expect to see several fierce battles for ice time among the forwards, which one would think will lead to better play in games. Who do you think is Moscow’s top center, David Backes or Ryan O’Reilly? Backes scored more last year, hit more and had a better plus-minus, but O’Reilly had more takeaways and blocked shots. Should Max Pacioretty be the top line left winger over Kris Versteeg? Pacioretty would win the popular vote, but if you look at their Season 8 stats, Versteeg has the edge. And on right wing, any one of three players could get top minutes. Mitch Marner will be the undisputed top right winger soon, but today, he has competition from veterans Kyle Palmieri and Wei Yang Zhang. GM Reichel will probably have to waive a forward to get under the cap, but it seems Moscow will be able to send two strong lines onto the ice every game.
3. How will they look in the defensive zone? Dennis Seidenberg has retired and returned to Germany to spend time drinking with Guybrush Threepwood, and Mark Fayne is unsigned as a free agent. That means a third of the Moscow defense corps will be new to the team. Nick Leddy is by far the best asset back there. The former Minsk and Madrid defenseman has been a plus player in all of his three seasons in the Russian capital. Last year, he scored a personal best 13 goals despite missing 13 games due to injury. Jyri Marttinen, a 27-year-old Finn, will be a starter for the second year in a row, but the remaining D positions are occupied by guys with tenuous holds on them. Erik Andersson played regularly last year and Trevor Van Riemsdyk played part-time, and both are slotted into the second pairing as of now. Rookie Layne Viveiros and veteran Adam McQuaid are the only other two defensemen on the team at the moment and both would struggle as full-timers.
