Three EURO records fall in Season 8

Some teams are done and others have up to three games to play, but two individual EURO records and one team record will be broken once Season 8 comes to an end.

Best Save Percentage: Jimmy Howard, the goalie in Athens, will better the save percentage record he set three seasons earlier when he was a Smurf. That season, Howard stopped pucks at a rate of 91.9 percent. This season, his save percentage is 92.1 with one game left on the schedule. Milan’s third-year starter Andrew Hammond is second to Howard in save percentage and he tied the old record through 82 games.

Most Takeaways: Tyler Seguin of Oslo was a minus 65 this season, but he scored 75 points and set a defensive record in the process with 183 takeaways. That’s two more takeaways than Erik Staal had in Season 1 during his original stint with Stockholm. Seguin, 26, who played a lot – 25 minutes per game – gave the puck up only 77 times for a turnover ratio of +106.

Lowest PIM average: The London Saracens are under new management and GM Mike Suk and his staff have stressed to the players that they have to stop beating themselves with penalties. The message sunk in. London averaged just 6.06 minutes in penalties per game, shattering the old record of 6.34, set by Milan in Season 6. Oslo this season tied Milan’s mark.

If he played more, Milan’s Jamie McGinn might have set a record for best faceoff percentage. McGinn won 63 percent of the draws he took – that’s 669 wins. But you need 1,000 wins to qualify for the record. Bratislava’s Jonathan Toews holds the league mark (62.7), setting it last season.

And unless John Tavares can put up a Daryl Sittler-like performance against the top team in the league this week, the points and goals records are safe for another year. Back in Season 1, Steven Stamkos racked up 129 points for the Frankfurt Inferno, which relocated to Lisbon; and in Season 5, Stamkos scored a record 59 goals. Tavares has 53 goals and 120 points this season with a game against Minsk left.
