With the score tied at 3-3 Tuesday in Bavaria, Munich’s Oscar Lindberg and Paris forward Corey Perry were tied up with each other along the boards as play moved along and Lindberg pulled an old trick he learned from a friend from back home in Skelleftea, Sweden.
Lindberg pointed up into the stands and said “Hey, look!” And as the unsuspecting Perry was looking up to wherever Lindberg was pointing, Lindberg elbowed him hard in the groin region. Perry tumbled to the ice and Lindberg skated away. But referee Ben Easterly of England saw the nifty trick and gave Lindberg a match penalty. Perry, Paris’ second-leading scorer this year and all-time, was really damaged, He could be out of the Paris lineup for up to two months.
Lindberg will be suspended for three games by the league. Sepp Blatter, the league’s Director of Discipline and Player Safety, said Lindberg would have been suspended longer if not for some information provided by accountant Rose, who found out both Lindberg and Berlin Smurf superstar Erik Forssell grew up in Skelleftea.
“I can only assume Lindberg learned that dirty tactic from Forssell when they were youth players. There can be no other explanation,” Blatter explained. “I might suspend Forssell too. Why wouldn’t I?”
“I said ‘why wouldn’t I’?” Blatter continued, as if to be directing the question to Berlin GM Guybrush Threepwood. “Perhaps Guybrush can give me a couple of hundred reasons why I shouldn’t suspend Forssell too.”
