Three Questions
1. How good is Stockholm’s defense corps? In a couple of words, they are among the most enviable collections of blueliners in the league. If you look at last year’s scoring list, forwards on the team’s top two lines occupied spots one through six, but they were followed by five defensemen who do a great job of adding to the offense. Zach Bogosian, Cam Fowler, Olli Maata, Keith Yandle and second-year pro John Klingberg are five of many reasons the Eagles were able to shoot up the standings from 19th to 8th overall last season. Those five Dmen could be fixtures in the Stockholm lineup for at least this season and next.
2. Can they win it this season? Minsk seems to be as strong as they were last year, so getting past them and into the finals will be quite the task, but Stockholm has the horses to make a good go of it. Having Brayden Holtby as the goalie certainly helps. The 27-year-old should put together a campaign that includes a save percentage around 91 percent. He had a good playoff series against Gothenburg last year but they lost and he will surely want to go a lot farther than one round this season.
3. Up front? The Eagles can put together two good lines and part of a third. They will be relying heavily on fourth liners Curtis Lazar, Charlie Coyle, Tomas Jurco and sometimes Riley Nash to keep their shifts in plus territory. The third line with Jack Eichel, Ryan Johansen and Luke Adam will also be pivotal and Stockholm needs production there while opposing teams focus on stopping the top two lines which are both powerful and dangerous. Stockholm has a long, long trading history and the parade turned into a trickle this off season. But Jeff Carter, 32, was sent packing to Berlin and in return, David Krejci, 31, was ushered in as the new top line center ahead of veteran Eric Staal on the depth chart.
