Couture’s 3 shorthanded goals sink Lions

Berlin 6, Zurich 5 – Logan Couture crushed the Zurich Lions’ spirit with three shorthanded goals, including the goal that broke a 5-5 tie and ended up being the winner. He and Loui Eriksson ended the game with 4 points each and Dion Phaneuf had 3 assists for the Smurfs, who were out-shot 28-21. Drew Stafford scored two for Zurich. The Lions will play without Ryan Strome for at least two weeks, as he sustained a groin pull in the third period. Dmitrij Jaskin, 22, has been called up to fill in.

Helsinki 4, Moscow 1 – The Helsinki Jokerit played just the way they wanted to at home against Moscow, a typical Helsinki game with a lot of hitting and penalties. Eleven different Helsinki players scored one point and they limited Dynamo to 7 shots and a Ryan O’Reilly goal over the last two periods with Henrik Lundquist in goal.

Geneva 5, Milan 3 – Milan should be happy to leave Geneva after opening the season with two losses in the Swiss city. The Generals led 1-0 after the first period and then shot ahead to a 4-0 lead when there was 8:40 left in the second period. Matt Read scored twice for Geneva, Nazem Kadri had 2 points and the two combined for 16 shots on goal.

Bratislava 3, Munich 2 (OT) – Bratislava came up with an overtime game-winner for the second straight game as Jonathan Toews’ wrist shot beat Cory Schneider while the Eagles were on the powerplay. It was Toews second goal of the game and frankly, Munich has to thank Schneider for the point in the standings because they were outshot 47-13. Toews had 12 shots by himself.

Minsk 4, Stockholm 1 – Milan Lucic scored a hat trick during a 7:10 stretch of the second period to lift the Hussars to a road win. Stockholm out-shot Minsk 32-30 but only Mats Zuccarello-Aasen could get a puck past Carey Price. Stockholm’s Zach Bogosian, John Klingberg and Darren Prout combined for 16 hits in the game.

Dublin 4, London 3 (OT-SO) – Brian Elliott stopped 43 London shots and Milan Michalek scored twice for Dublin in London. The Fighting Irish’s discipline was a big factor in the win as they took just one penalty, compared to London’s five. Jeff Skinner and Michael Grabner each had a goal and two assists for London.
