Gothenburg 2, Moscow 0 – Frolunda was better than Spartak in just about every area, handing Moscow their second shutout of the week and third of the season. Pekka Rinne was perfect in goal, the penalty killers were perfect during 7 Moscow powerplays, and Frolunda outshot Spartak 32-23 in the game and 12-6 in the third period. They also out-hit Moscow 32-15 with defensemen Dan Girardi, John Carlson and former Moscow player Kevin Dallman accounting for 14 hits combined. Jordan Eberle scored in the first period and Mikko Koivu added a goal in the second period. Moscow captain David Backes took 3 holding penalties in the game. For Rinne, it was shoutout number 3 this season and his 30th all-time, which puts him on the top of that EURO League list.
Paris 4, Berlin 3 (OT-SO) – Philipp Grubauer was the main reason the Paris Rouge Eiffels were able to beat the Smurfs in Berlin. The backup goalie stopped 35 of 38 shots in regulation time, then all 4 in overtime and all 3 in the shootout. Ryan Callahan scored a pair of goals for the Smurfs, but Mike Richards and Alex Tanguay scored big goals for Paris. Richards tallied shorthanded to put Paris up 2-0 and Tanguay, a free agent signing this week, scored his first of the year to make it 3-1 in the second period. Tanguay, 37, played for Madrid for five full seasons, but nobody signed him for this season. David Perron was the only shooter to score in the shootout.
Belfast 3, Copenhagen 2 (OT-SO) – The Tridents trailed 2-0 with 13 minutes remaining but were able to tie the game and send it to overtime. Nazem Kadri and Matt Duchene each scored his 12th of the season for Belfast, while Drew Shore and Slava Voynov scored for the Tridents. In the shootout, the goalies were awful. Jon Quick made one save in three shots, but Copenhagen’s Andres De La Garma allowed 3 goals on 3 shots. Veteran Copenhagen defenseman Dan Hamhuis blocked 3 shots and was credited with 3 hits.
Lisbon 6, Zurich 1 – Lisbon, although currently not in a playoff position, raised its home record to an impressive 12-2-1 with a convincing win over the Lions. Lisbon’s Emerson Etem entered the game with 1 goal in 29 games and he came up with two new ones Tuesday. He and Nick Bjugstad each had a three-point game, while three of their teammates scored two points, and another six had at least a point. Patrice Bergeron of Zurich, put up impressive numbers – 4 shots, 3 hits, 3 blocked shots and 21 of 33 in faceoffs – but his line score was stained by a minus 3 rating.
Helsinki 4, Minsk 0 – Henrik Lundqvist shut out the Hussars while his teammates got to Carey Price for four goals. Despite the fact Minsk enjoyed 9 powerplay chances, the big line of Nicklas Backstrom, Patrick Kane and Milan Lucic managed to get only 5 shots on Lundqvist. Jokerit center Paul Stastny and defenseman Jack Johnson each had a goal and an assist. Snipers Thomas Vanek and Alexander Radulov also beat Price in the game. Michael Del Zotto, who has been one of Minsk’s top players this season, tweaked a groin and left the game in the third period. He is listed as day-to-day.
Stockholm 2, Oslo 1 – The surging Swedish team completely dominated the game, but Oslo goalie Semyon Varlamov kept his team within a goal of the Eagles the entire time. Varlamov made 41 saves, including 15 in a first period that saw one goal scored – a Tyler Seguin wrist shot that beat Braden Holtby on the stick side. Stockholm evened the score in the second period thanks to a John Klingberg goal – his 10th of his rookie season – and they finally took the lead in the final period when Ryan Johansen scored for the third time this season. J.T. Miller and Brendan Gallagher led everyone in shots on goal with 5 apiece.
