Friday games
Stockholm 3, Gothenburg 0 – The Eagles dominated at home, out-shooting Gothenburg 43-16 and shutting out Frolunda. Gothenburg goalie Anders Lindback, who ended up making 40 saves, kept his team in the game by holding off Stockholm’s shooters until Derick Brassard stole the puck from Dan Girardi right in front of the net and slammed it in with a little less than 8 minutes remaining. Stockholm added two empty-net goals.
Milan 4, Bratislava 3 (OT) – Defenseman Andrew MacDonald’s slapshot late in the third period went in for his second goal of the game and it sent the game into overtime where his Milan teammate Kyle Okposo finished off the Eagles in Slovakia. Wei Yang Zhang scored a pair of goals for Bratislava.
Moscow 6, Prague 1 – Moscow had a 2-1 lead when the second period started and proceeded to score four goals to make it 6-1 by the next intermission. Spartak outshot the Wolf Pack 30-15 in the game. David Backes and Kris Versteeg had 3 points each for the Russians.
Belfast 4, Edinburgh 0 – The Capitals outshot visiting Belfast 30-27, but it didn’t matter because goalie Jonathan Quick was at his very best and earned his first shutout of the season. Matt Mouslon, Sidney Crosby and Matt Duchene each scored his 10th goal of the season in the game.
Helsinki 3, Bern 2 (OT) – Helsinki’s Henrik Lundquist stopped three Bern shots in overtime and allowed Paul Stastny to become the hero when he rocketed a shot past Mike Smith 2:10 into the extra period. The Jokerit gave up 7 man-advantage opportunities and Brad Marchand’s penalty in the third period proved costly because Radim Vrbata scored on the powerplay for Bern to force the overtime.
Saturday games
Paris 7, Athens 1 – Joffrey Lupul scored three times and Corey Perry had 4 points for Paris. Evgeny Malkin leads the Rouge Eiffels in goals with 18, Lupul is second with 14, and Perry is third with 13. Paris’ powerplay was 3 for 5 in the game.
Zurich 2, Madrid 1 (OT-SO) – Stars Patrice Bergeron of Zurich and Madrid’s Erik Karlsson were the only ones who could beat goalies Robin Lehner (36 saves for Madrid) and Cam Ward (17 saves for Zurich) in regulation time or overtime. Lions Drew Stafford and Tomas Tatar scored in the shootout to win it.
Berlin 4, Lisbon 1 – Lisbon led 1-0 going into the second period, but the Smurfs came back with 4 goals, including 3 in the third. Nikolai Kulemin and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had 2 points apiece for Berlin.
Munich 4, Dublin 3 (OT) – Patrick Marleau scored in overtime to give Munich the win. It was his 5th goal of the season for the Dire Wolf, who got 3 points from their new leading scorer, Talgat Zhailauov. After getting goals from defensemen Ryan Murray and Matt Carle, the Fighting Irish got a point in the standings when James Van Riemsdyk scored with 8 seconds left in regulation.
St. Petersburg 4, Minsk 2 – The Hussars and Red Stars were involved in a 77-shot game, with Petrograd doing more of the scoring. Minsk came back twice to tie the score, but Brock Nelson’s two third-period goals did in the Hussars. Antti Niemi stopped 39 Minsk shots for the win.
Oslo 3, London 2 (OT) – Zach Parise and Tyler Seguin combined on an overtime goal to hand the slumping Dons a disappointing loss in front of the home folks. It was London’s 5th straight loss and they have dropped the last four by one goal. Oslo played a disciplined game, not allowing the London powerplay unit on the ice even once.
Sunday games
Bratislava 3, Paris 2 – Marc-Andre Fleury made 40 saves and Martin Hanzal scored his 6th of the season in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and put Bratislava in the lead for good. The Eagles’ leading scorer, Milan Gulas, tallied his 10th of the year.
Stockholm 4, Geneva 0 – The Eagles recorded their second shutout in as many games. Braden Holtby made 23 saves after making 16 saves in Friday’s shutout of Gothenburg. Fourth-line linemates Mattias Sjogren and Charlie Coyle had 2 points each. Five Generals players finished minus 4 on the day.
Zurich 3, Milan 0 – Neither team could get its powerplay going, but it didn’t matter much to the Lions, who got a 27-save shutout performance out of backup Jeff Zatkoff. Zurich got goals from fourth-liner Ben Smith, third-liner veteran Patrick Sharp and defenseman Matt Bartkowski.
Lisbon 4, Athens 3 (OT) – John Tavares scored twice for Lisbon to stake them to a 2-0 lead, but it was veteran Joe Pavelski who gave them the win in overtime with his 9th of the season. Trailing 3-1 Athens received goals from unlikely sources Bobby Sanguinetti and Boyd Gordon to force the game into overtime on the road. For both players, it was their second goal of the year.
Munich 4, Helsinki 1 – Visiting Helsinki led 1-0 thanks to Daniel Fernholm’s first goal of the year, before Munich stormed back with 2 goals in the second period and 2 more in the third. Filip Forsberg scored both second-period goals. The Dire Wolf have moved up to 10th place overall and 4th in the Southern Conference.
Madrid 5, Gothenburg 4 – The Royals held off Gothenburg in a furious, back-and-forth game in Sweden. R.J. Umberger’s third period goal turned out to be the game-winner, but not after a lot of stuff happened. It was Umberger’s second goal in the third and it put his team up 5-3 with 6 minutes left. But Adam Henrique matched him with his second of the period 4 minutes later to put Frolunda within a goal of tying it. Gothenburg pulled their goalie and applied max pressure, with Jordan Eberle nearly tying it in the last 20 seconds when he fired a shot off the goal post. In the dying seconds, Madrid goalie Darcy Kuemper stoned Carl Hagelin on the doorstep to preserve the regulation time win.
