Oslo tops Athens in a shootout

Oslo 3, Athens 2 (OT – SO) – The Oslo Outlaws kept Athens’ big guns off the scoreboard and emerged from Greece with a win.  Anze Kopitar, T.J. Oshie, Andrew Ladd and Jason Pominville were able to fire a combined 22 shots at the Oslo net, but Semyon Varlamov was on his game and stopped them all. Kopitar isn’t stopped very often. The former Spartak star has 30 points in 23 games as a Greek and he is the league’s shots leader by a wide margin, averaging 5.69 per game. Instead, damage was done by two Greeks who came into the game without a goal yet this year. Bobby Butler, who is recently returned from an injury, and checking center Boyd Gordon each scored his first of the season. Meanwhile, Oslo’s newest big gun, free agent signing Zach Parise, opened the scoring with his 5th of the season. The Outlaws also got a goal from David Jones to tie it in the third and in the shootout, the only skater who scored was Oslo’s leading goal scorer, Tomas Hertl.

Berlin 6, Bratislava 3 – Loui Eriksson and Ryan Callahan put on quite a show and nobody in Slovakia applauded. Each Smurf tallied two goals and added an assist and the pair combined for 15 shots on goal.Berlin controlled the first two periods and outshot the Eagles 31-11 in that span, but going into the final period, the Smurfs trailed 3-2. Then they exploded for three goals and an empty-netter to win it. Ericsson and Callahan now have 10 goals apiece for the Smurfs. Berlin’s four centers all won the majority of their face-offs, with David Krejci doing the best, taking 11 of 14. For Bratislava, Tyler Ennis was promoted back to the top line just before the game and he responded with two goals to give him 7 on the season.

Moscow 4, Helsinki 1 – One would think the fact Henrik Lundquist made 51 saves meant Helsinki won another game, but boy, that wasn’t the case at all. Moscow outshot the Jokerit 55-22 and breezed to a win at home. Spartak fired 21 shots at Lundquist in each of the last two periods. Alexander Radulov opened the scoring in the game for Helsinki, but the Jokers’ only lead lasted only about 30 seconds. Jannik Hansen scored to tie it and Ryan O’Reilly and Kris Versteeg added goals to put Moscow in control. David Backes scored into a empty net with 42 seconds to play. Moscow also matched Helsinki at their forte: hitting. The Jokerit totaled 30 hits, to Spartak’s 29. Moscow is in third place overall.

Geneva 6, Zurich 1 – After Ilya Kovalchuk opened the scoring and gave Zurich a lead halfway into the first period, the Geneva Generals made their neighbor’s defense and goalie look like cheese – Swiss, that is. Five Generals scored six goals on Cam Ward in a total of 9 shots before he was pulled in favor of Jeff Zatkoff, who had a much better day. Four of Geneva’s goals came on the power play and Nick Foligno scored twice. Fans hope Foligno has shifted into a new gear. He normally scores 15 to 20 goals and more than 40 points per season, but right now, the 29-year-old left wing is 11th on the team in scoring with only 4 goals and 4 assists. David Desharnais has been the team’s most productive player with 17 points win 22 games.

Belfast 6, London 4 – The Giants turned away one of the league’s newest big dogs and outshot them 44-22 in the process. London made a go of it, fighting back from a 5-1 deficit to score three third-period goals, but Vladimir Tarasenko’s dagger with 6:15 to play dulled the momentum and assured the win for Belfast. Matt Duchene scored twice for the defending champs and he now has 8 goals this season. Evander Kane had the lone assist on both Duchene goals. Belfast’s Nazem cadre led everyone in scoring with 3 points, all assists. He, Kane and Ondrej Palat all share the team’s scoring lead with 24 points in 22 games. London’s top scorers, Taylor Hall and one-time Giant Rick Nash, each have 25 points in 21 games.

Edinburgh 3, Copenhagen 0 – Luka Gracnar? Yes, the 22-year-old Slovenian who backs up Jakub Kovar as Edinburgh goalie recorded his first EURO shutout on Friday, blanking the Tridents on all of their 23 shots. Gracnar has played in 8 games for the Caps this season and has a save percentage of 89.2. Oddly, Kovar is still looking for his first-ever shutout through 39 appearances. Rickard Wallin, Mike Hoffman and Gurkan Cetinkaya scored goals for Edinburgh and Wallin also had an assist. Edinburgh has started slowly this season and currently sits in 22nd place, but one of the teams the Caps are pursuing is Copenhagen, which holds 8th place in the conference. Friday’s win puts the Capitals 4 points behind the Tridents.
