St. Petersburg 5, Edinburgh 3 – The Red Stars fired 53 shots on Edinburgh goalie Jakub Kovar on Wednesday. One of the players Jakub was facing was his older brother Jan, the reigning Rookie of the Year. Jan scored once and had a game-high 8 shots on his brother and when the game’s 3 stars were announced, the brothers were 1 and 2. Edinburgh started very well and held a 3-1 lead after a period, but St. Petersburg came back to win with 2 goals in the second period and two more in the third. A shorthanded tally by Brian Boyle turned out to be the game-winner. Jonathan Huberdeau assisted on two Red Star goals and was the only player on either team to earn more than one point, but he almost ended up being the goat. Huberdeau took three separate minor penalties in the third period while the score was either 3-3 or 4-3.
Gothenburg 5, Dublin 3 – It was a good sign for Frolunda that they were able to mount a third-period comeback to defeat the visiting Fighting Irish and keep a losing streak from extanding to 3 games. Jordan Eberle scored a pair of goals for Gburg, but the big moment in the game came with about 13 and a half minutes to play while Gothenburg was killing off a Marc-Eduoard Vlasic minor penalty. John Carlson whistled a long shot past Brian Elliott to put Frolunda in front to stay. Vlasic had scored to tie the game about 2 minutes before his penalty. Eberle and his linemates Adam Henrique and Petr Vrana all finished with 3 points in the game. Dublin’s top line of Ryan Kesler, Alexander Ovechkin and Jakub Silfverberg had a miserable game together. Kesler finished minus 5 and his wingers were both minus 4.
Paris 5, Stockholm 1 – Evgeny Malkin scored 3 points and had 9 shots on goal to lead Paris over Stockholm 5-1. The Eagles were able to keep the game close for only a period before the Rouge Eiffels pulled away. The home team ended up outshooting Stockholm 52-23. Paris defenseman Ossi Vaananen, who is the league’s all-time leader in plus-minus, added a plus 2 to his total, as did Travis Hamonic, who ranks 10th all-time. Paris also dominated the faceoff circles with Malkin, David Bolland and Mike Richards – who was playing against his former team – combining to win 42 of 72 faceoffs.
Geneva 2, Bern 1 – In a defensive battle between Swiss rivals, the Generals emerged with a road win over the Bears. Frederik Andersen stopped all but one of Bern’s 26 shots to earn the win. Matt Read and Mike Fisher scored goals for Geneva while Drew Miller scored for the Bears. Geneva’s Nick Foligno didn’t score a point in the game, but he contributed with 4 shot blocks. Geneva now leads the Schloder Division, a point ahead of Berlin and 3 ahead of Bern.
Athens 4, Oslo 1 – All five goals scored in the game were scored on powerplays, with Athens making good on 4 of their 7 opportunities. As of today, the Greeks currently rank 13th in the league in PP percentage with Oslo right behind them in 14th place. The game was more of a shootout than a close-checking affair, with Athens outshooting Oslo 43-35. Jaroslav Halak was beaten just once, when Oslo’s Eric Gelinas scored his 6th of the season early in the third period to cut Athens’ lead to 2-1. But penalties taken by Tyler Kennedy and Gilbert Brule killed the Outlaws’ momentum and gave Athens a 5-on-3 situation that they got a goal out of, thanks to 27-year-old defenseman Bobby Saguinetti and his first-ever EURO score. Athens had to make due with 5 defensemen for most of the game after Staffan Kronwall received a game misconduct following a major penalty for slashing.
Madrid 3, Bratislava 2 – Sean Couturier provided the back-breaking goal late in the third period when he beat Bratislava goalie Corey Crawford while Madrid was skating shorthanded. While defenseman Philip Larsen scored a shorthanded goal for the Eagles, Bratislava’s penalty killing let them down. Madrid had 6 powerplay opportunities and were able to capitalize twice with goals by Nathan Gerbe and Derek Stepan that erased Bratislava one-goal leads. Stepan also had 3 shot blocks in the win. Bratislava defenseman Tyler Myers threw his 6-8, 230-pound body around, registering 8 hits. He now leads the league in that category. With the win, Madrid moves into 7th place in the league and the Royals have the second-highest point total in the Southern Conference.
