Three Questions
1. Hi, are you my new teammate? Copenhagen’s roster changes more than the stock market does. After three fantastic seasons in the league’s first years, the Tridents started to tumble down the standings in Season 4 and GM Dylan Callow wasted no time springing into action, gutting the team and shuffling personnel like a blackjack dealer shuffles cards in a casino. Stephen Weiss has been a good soldier in Copenhagen and he has survived the madness … so far, at least. Weiss was drafted in the fourth round of the initial league draft and he has suited up for 383 games since, wearing no other team’s sweater. Ryan Murphy is the only other original draftee who has played for only Copenhagen. Of course, Murphy has been slow to develop and has only gotten into 3 games to date, nonetheless, he hasn’t had to go to the Copenhagen post office to give them a forwarding address*. Roberto Luongo and Colin Greening are back in Trident red and white* after spending two seasons elsewhere. The prelude to Season 6 repeats the notes Callow played in the prelude to Season 5. Sixteen* new players have been added to the roster this season, while 8* players from last year’s roster are gone for various reasons, including Joe Pavelski, who was traded to Lisbon. The Tridents will look different from the Season 5 Tridents and nothing like the Season 4 team. It gets pretty confusing in the team’s front office building. Expect the men and women who print the game program to scratch GM Callow’s car or puncture his tires a few times this season.
*May no longer be true, depending on how soon you are reading this after it was published.
2. So with all the new faces, who will stand out? With the fourth pick in the draft, Callow snagged Johnny Gaudreau. As he does in Calgary these days, Gaudreau will attract the most fans and reporters. He can dangle and create offense, but he’s only 21. His best days – lots and lots of them – are ahead of him. In truth, the team does not have many stars right now to get fans into the arena. By Websim’s definition, Copenhagen has just two “superstars” with 80 OV ratings. Slava Voynov and Luongo will have company soon though. Dougie Hamilton scored 11 goals from his defense position last year and is quickly becoming one of the better players in the league. Two young goalies and 9 young forwards are also on the road to becoming superstars, but people who attend games in Denmark will have to sit through some discouraging contests until that crop of players matures.
3. Are there holes in the lineup? Next question. We’re not even going to trying to describe the Tridents’ line combinations and defense pairings until Jan. 29, the day after the trade deadline. We will go out on a limb, however, and predict that Weiss will see a lot of ice time. Coach Dave Cameron will do his best to find chemistry throughout the lineup and if he finds some, he should rush to Callow with the news. And if the GM has a phone up to his ear … definitely interrupt him. Cameron has a lot to fix with his new handymen. Last season, the Tridents had trouble scoring. They were fifth from the bottom in goals per game and third from the bottom in powerplays. They were fairly successful in generating shots, however, so more shooting drills might pay off. They also did well in limiting shots on goal, but their 3.76 goals against average was second worst in the EURO. Those stats point to goaltending and Callow hopes he upgraded the team there by hiring the 37-year-old Luongo to replace Tim Thomas, who retired after the season at age 42. Andres De La Garma and Petr Mrazek seem to have the inside track on succeeding Luongo in goal, but employment stability in Copenhagen is … how can we put this … terrifying.
