Berlin faces daunting odds now

Irish fans are doing a jig after the Belfast Giants walloped Berlin 6-0 to take a 2-0 lead in the EURO Cup Finals.

Nathan MacKinnon scored twice for Belfast and he wasn’t even among the three stars of the game. Jonathan Quick was named the first star because Berlin actually outshot the Giants 25-22 and Quick stopped everything thrown at him. In 15 playoff games, Quick has a save percentage of 93.9 and a 1.73 goals against average, numbers that are markedly better than any he’s produced through five seasons.

P.K. Subban was named second star after scoring a shorthanded goal, gaining an assist and playing plus 5 hockey. Third star Ondrej Palat also had a goal and an assist, was plus 4, and led his team in shots on goal with 5.

Despite being outscored 12-1 so far in the series, Berlin is just as far behind as they would be if they had lost each game by a goal, but they need to win 4 of the next 5 games to claim the Cup. Berlin Coach Adam Oates has shuffled his lineup for Game 3, moving Logan Couture, Nathan Horton and Jiri Tlusty to new positions.

Tony Martensson, a Swede who centers Berlin’s third line, might have more reason than any Smurf to play hard in this series because he was a member of the Giants when they were a struggling franchise, scoring 55 goals in two seasons before being traded away the year Belfast won its Cup. The trade was a 4-for-2 deal with Edinburgh that brought James Neal and Oliver Ekman-Larsson to Belfast.
