St. Petersburg 5, London 2 – In a game against London and all-star goalie Martin Jones, Jonathan Huberdeau hit the 20-goal mark for the first time in his career and he scored a hat trick in St. Petersburg’s 5-2 win. Huberdeau is one of three Red Stars with 21 goals or more. Brad Richards (23) and Wayne Simmonds (21) are the others. The game was closer than the score showed. St. Petersburg scored two empty-net goals in the final 34 seconds. While London is securely in the playoffs, St. Petersburg is one of five tightly-bunched clubs trying to secure the last three playoff spots in the Northern Conference.
Berlin 3, Athens 2 (OT) – A highly unlikely third period seemed to tilt momentum in Athens’ favor, but the Smurfs came through in overtime to win a game they should have. David Krejci scored the game-winner – his second of the game and 20th of the season – 4 minutes and 1 second into overtime. The first period was scoreless and Berlin led 2-1 after two periods. In the third period, the Smurfs seemed angry and outshot the visiting Greeks 20-2. But somehow, Cam Ward of Athens was able to fend off all 20 Berlin shots while Scott Hartnell scored on one of Athens’ two shots to tie the game and force overtime. Overall, Berlin outshot Athens 46-25.
Prague 6, Zurich 5 – The Wolf Pack blitzed the Lions in the first period, scoring 4 goals, and were able to fend off Zurich’s late charge in the third period. Giulio Scandella had a 3-point game for Prague, while Janne Niskala had 3 points and 5 hits for the host team in Zurich. Ryan Getzlaf scored twice for Prague and teammates Marcel Hossa, Roman Josi and Alexander Galcheyuk all had 2 points. Prague has to make up a 5-point deficit over the next 18 games in order to make the playoffs. Zurich played without Patrick Sharp on Thursday and they will have to get used to it. Sharp played 4 minutes the night before against Bern and had an assist, but he left with a severe knee injury that will force him out of action for 3 to 4 weeks. He should return to the lineup for the team’s last 5 games.
Minsk 3, Helsinki 2 (OT) – Max Chudinov scored his 10th goal of the season with 3:09 remaining in overtime to give Minsk a win over the Jokerit. Helsinki gave Minsk many chances to score and were probably lucky to get a point out of the game. Minsk had 7 powerplays and outshot the Jokerit 47-24. Jordan Staal of Minsk had more points than anyone in the game (3 assists), but Helsinki’s Nerius Alisauskas was the most noticeable. The Lithuanian defenseman had an assist to go along with 6 hits and 5 blocked shots.
Madrid 3, Lisbon 0 – It was Spain over neighboring Portugal in convincing fashion Thursday. Alex Tanguay scored his 21st of the season to break a scoreless tie in the second period and Sean Couturier tallied to make it 2-0 Madrid before Gabriel Landeskog scored into the open Lisbon net while the Royals were penalty killing in the last minutes of the game. It was Landeskog’s team-leading 30th goal of the season and he now has at least 30 goals in three of his five seasons in the EURO. Madrid outshot the visitors from Portugal 36-21 as Robin Lehner got the shutout in goal.
Copenhagen 3, Geneva 0 – The old man, Tim Thomas, recorded a road shutout to help the Copenhagen Tridents topple Geneva. Thomas made 32 saves and Marko Dano had a goal and an assist for Copenhagen. Josh Holden has played well for the Tridents lately, scoring big points, and he contributed in another way Thursday, dishing out 5 hits. The Tridents have won three of their last four games.
