Bern 3, Milan 2 – Bern should get more players with “berg” in their name. Henrik Zetterberg scored twice to give the Bears a 2-0 lead and Dennis Seidenberg blasted in a shot to break a tie and give Bern a lead they were able to hold onto. Mike Babcock’s guys gave Milan every chance to get goals, but the Guerriero were 0 for 7 on the powerplay. They did, however, score twice at even strength with Mathis Olimb and Jamie McGinn getting the goals. As is usually the case, Bern’s Brent Seabrook played a devastating brand of hockey for Bern. He put in 30 minutes, blocked 3 shots and delivered 7 hits, including a crushing check on Joakim Lindstrom that didn’t injure the Milan forward but will get plenty of hits on YouTube. Bern has a struggle on their hands if they want to make the playoffs this season. The Bears are currently 10 points out of 8th place with 29 games left.
Munich 4, Geneva 2 – The Dire Wolf have been playing much better hockey in the last month and their third straight win came in Bavaria against visiting Geneva. The win was also Munich’s 6th in 8 games. Geneva got themselves into a little penalty trouble early in the game and Munich used the possession time to build a 3-1 lead. Talgat Zhailauov, the Kazakhstanian whose name has shown up often during Munich’s recent good stretch, was the only player to get more than one point in the game. He had two assists and won 11 of 18 faceoffs. Gareth Roberts scored the Dire Wolf’s 4th goal and it was his first since joining Munich 7 games ago in a trade with Copenhagen.
Moscow 5, Dublin 0 – With the words “Brawlers” and “Fighting” in the teams’ nicknames, fans might have expected a wilder game from Moscow and Dublin, but it really wasn’t a contest. Dublin did get testy during the game, taking 7 penalties including a major, a double minor and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, but those actions only seemed to help Moscow prevent a comeback from occurring. Jaroslav Halak made 24 saves to earn the shutout, getting help at the other end from Dustin Brown (2 goals), Brandon Sutter (3 points), captain Andrew Ladd (3 points) and others.
Edinburgh 4, Prague 2 – Traveling from Scotland to the Czech Republic didn’t seem to cause any lag in the Capitals’ game Thursday. They outshot their hosts 37-28, got two goals out of Rick Nash and built a 3-0 lead by the time the second period was over. Kari Lehtonen was solid in the Caps’ net, making 26 saves.
Lisbon 6, Madrid 3 – Lisbon got huge contributions from second-line forwards Zach Parise and Kyle Brodziak to win in neighboring Spain. Parise scored twice and had 2 assists, while Brodziak, scored twice and had one assist. Their center, Alexei Kalyuzhny, had 2 assists. The game was pretty close in shots on goal – 34-30 in favor of Lisbon – but rookie goalie Hayden Hawkey of Lisbon outperformed Madrid veteran Jonas Hiller. Lisbon has worked their way to a tie with Moscow for third place overall in the league.
Helsinki 4, Gothenburg 3 – Henrik Lundqvist seems to save his best for the two teams from his native Sweden. King Henrik helped Helsinki steal a game in Gothenburg Thursday. His Jokerit were outshot by the Devils 44-19 but won it in overtime when Braydon Schenn scored his 6th of the season after taking a pass from Alexandre Burrows. Schenn finished as one of two multi-point performers. He had an assist on a goal by Cody Eakin that tied the game 3-3 in the third period. Gothenburg’s Adam Henrique had 2 assists and a game-high 11 shots on Lundqvist.
