Dublin 4, Athens 1 – Dublin goalie Brian Elliott stopped 48 shots to win in Athens on Thursday. Elliott, who played for Zurich for 3 seasons and Copenhagen last year, is in the midst of his best season to date. Only Berlin’s Jimmy Howard has a better save percentage than the 91.6 average Elliott has achieved through 27 games. The top forward line for the Irish gave the goalie the offensive support he needed to notch the win. Ryan Kesler and Phil Kessel scored the first two goals of the game in the first period and they combined to produce the last goal in the third period. Both forwards now have 15 goals this season. Athens centers David Backes and Ryan O’Reilly continued their strong play of late, combining for a total of 19 shots on Elliott.
Geneva 4, Madrid 1 – The Generals gave the impression they were going to win the game after putting together a very strong second period, but with 19 minutes to go, they trailed 1-0. Then the flood gates opened and Madrid goalie Robin Lehner finally let some pucks past him. For Geneva, Dennis Wideman was plus 3 and had two assists and Marian Gaborik had a goal and an assist.
Bern 2, Moscow 1 – The Bare Bear Brawlers, with Duncan Keith on the shelf and veteran Vincent Lecavalier waived, seem lost at the moment and Tobias Enstrom, Henrik Zetterberg and the Bern Bears kept them pointed in the wrong direction. Enstrom scored a game-tying goal in the second period and assisted on the game-winner by Andrei Kostitsyn with 1:13 left to play. Zetterberg assisted on both goals. Neither team’s powerplay connected for a goal in a total of 11 chances and Thomas Greiss outdueled Jaroslav Halak in the goalie duel.
Belfast 4, St. Petersburg 1 – The shots were dead even, but Belfast’s goalie, Cam Talbot, was better than Antti Niemi was for the Red Stars. P.K. Subban and Cody Hodgson finished with 2 points each for Belfast and Justin Faulk led the team in blocked shots (3) and hits (6). Jonathan Huberdeau scored a goal on one of his 5 shots for St. Petersburg.
Milan 4, Copenhagen 2 – The Guerriero seemed to gain confidence and power as the game went on and their offense was running on all cylinders throughout the third period, leading to a 3-goal surge and a victory. Former Rookie of the Year Niklas Danielsson and linemates Kyle Okposo and Tyler Johnson were at their very best, accounting for all 4 Milan goals. Danielsson scored twice while both Johnson and Okposo finished with a goal and 3 assists. Halfway through the game, Copenhagen had a 2-0 lead on goals by Chris Higgins and Marko Dano.
Edinburgh 3, Oslo 2 – Thanks to a late goal by Olivier Roland, the Capitals were able to leave Norway with a win. Claude Giroux scored his 20th of the season for Edinburgh after teammate Brandon Dubinsky tied the game 1-1 in the first period. Oslo got goals from rookie Robert Roosa and forward Mikhail Grabovski. Outlaw rookie Viktor Antipin, the first person selected in the Season 5 draft, had an assist and 6 blocked shots.
