BBBs beat Berlin; Munich drops another 1-goal game

Moscow 3, Berlin 2 – The Smurfs tried to pour it on at the end and erase Moscow’s early 3-0 lead, but the Bare Bear Brawlers held them off to claim the 2 points in a battle between two of the league’s best teams. Duncan Keith, Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown tallied for Moscow and they held a 3-0 lead until Ryan Callahan scored for the Smurfs with 13:18 to go in the second period. Patric Hornqvist cut the lead to 3-2 halfway through the third period, but that’s as close as Berlin got. Jaro Halak made 30 saves for Moscow and teammate Jason Garrison had 3 blocked shots and 3 hits.

Lisbon 6, Munich 5 – Since their shocking 6-3 win over German rival Berlin, the Munich Dire Wolf have dropped 8 games, but they have been “in” most of those game all the way till the final buzzer. Their loss in Portugal Monday was their third straight one-goal loss and their fifth of the eight-game losing streak. Lisbon was up 6-4 in the third period when Patrik Elias came up with a shorthanded goal and gave Munich momentum. But a Francois Beauchemin holding penalty with 1:19 to play made the rally almost impossible. Elias and former New Jersey Devils teammate Zach Parise, now of Lisbon, led everyone in scoring with a goal and 2 assists each. Tagat Zhailauov scored a pair of goals for the Dire Wolf, while Lisbon’s Shea Weber equaled that feat. Lisbon’s Steven Stamkos was all over the offensive zone and he finished with a goal, an assist and 10 shots on goal.

Dublin 5, St. Petersburg 3 – The Fighting Irish righted the ship at home but St. Petersburg made it a real struggle. Dublin lost 8 straight games, beat Moscow, and then lost the next four contests leading up to Monday’s game with Petrograd, which has been playing .500 hockey of late. The big Dublin line of Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel and Evander Kane did in the Red Stars. Kessel scored the only goal of the first period, his 11th of the season, and added another goal 5 minutes into the third period to make it 3-1. Kane scored later in the period to give the Irish a two-goal cushion again and Kesler added an empty net goal to break St. Petersburg’s furious attempt to send the game to overtime. Dmitri Kalinin was the best St. Pete player Monday. He had a goal and an assist and with 15 points in 33 games this season, the 29-year-old, four-year member of the team is on pace to have his best offensive season so far.

Edinburgh 3, London 2 – Claude Giroux scored his 16th goal of the season to break a 2-2 tie and help win it for the Caps in London. Giroux and linemate Rick Nash each had a goal and an assist and their other linemate, Jamie Benn, had an assist on all 3 Edinburgh goals. Jake Gardiner had two assists, 3 hits and 3 blocked shots for the Dons in a close game that saw the home team get outshot 38-34.
Helsinki 4, Geneva 1 – Brad Marchand and Paul Stastny played great games for the Jokerit and Helsinki’s constant hitting seemed to keep the Generals off their game. Marchard and Stastny both had 6 shots on goal and Marchand scored two goals late in the game. He also had an assist on a powerplay goal by Jarome Iginla. When Marchand wasn’t on the ice, Stastny frequently was and he offered no rest for Geneva’s defense. The 30-year-old center also had 6 shots on goal to go along with 5 hits and he won 20 of 29 faceoffs. Helsinki out-hit Geneva 42-26 in the game. Defensemen Daniel Fernholm of Helsinki and Ilya Nikulin of Geneva led everyone in the hit department with 6 each.

Bratislava 3, Prague 1 – The Eagles beat their neighbors to the north with a balanced and relentless attack. The biggest goal was Michael Stone’s shorthanded tally in the second period that made the score 2-0. An aggressive but clean player, Stone has been one of the most successful EURO League rookies this season. He is second in plus-minus to Minsk’s Aaron Ekblad among all rookies and he is one of three rookie defensemen with 4 or more goals. Stone has 4 and the others are Ekblad (4) and Stone’s teammate in Bratislava, Patrick Wiercoch (5). Speaking of Bratislava rookies, coach Brent Sutter demoted Tyler Toffoli before Monday’s game and replaced him with seldom-used veteran Matt Frattin. The coach said he wants Toffoli to work on passing and being more aware of his teammates on the ice.
