Lisbon 6, Munich 0 – Former Moscow Spartak forward Alexei Kalyuzhny racked up 5 points as Lisbon easily turned away visiting Munich. Kalyuzhny scored his 3rd goal of the season and had 4 assists in the game to give him 17 so far this season as a third-line center. He should easily surpass his personal best assist total of 23, which he achieved twice in Moscow. Kyle Brodziak and defenseman Seth Jones scored two goals apiece for the Portuguese team.
Zurich 6, Athens 5 (shootout) – Zurich coach Peter Laviolette made the play of the game very early Tuesday. Just 4 and a half minutes into it, he pulled Devan Dubnyk after the goalie allowed three Athens goals on 5 shots. It got much better for the Lions from that point on and they were eventually able to tie the game and win it in a shootout. Zurich’s charge was led by Drew Stafford and Jakub Voracek, who each fired in two goals. David Backes was Athens’ hero through 65 minutes of play and then he was the goat, sort of. Backes scored the first goal of the game just 59 seconds in and he was responsible for the Greeks salvaging a point in the standings because he tied the score in the third period and forced overtime. But he was the only one of six shooters in the shootout who failed to score. Roberto Luongo, who replaced Dubnyk, stopped him.
Gothenburg 3, Geneva 1 – Gothenburg was outshot in two of three lopsided periods, but they built a 3-0 lead, took it into the third period, and nearly got a shutout. Speedy Petr Vrana scored for the fourth time this season to make it 2-0. Goals by Alec Martinez and then Louis Leblanc sandwiched Vrana’s tally. Rookie Chris Legge had an assist and 4 hits for the Devils.
Berlin 3, Dublin 1 – Remember when Munich beat Berlin three days ago? The Smurfs did and they took it out on visiting Dublin, outshooting the Fighting Irish 47-23. Logan Couture opened the scoring with his 9th of the season on a powerplay and Patric Hornqvist tallied very late in the first period. Geneva made it a one-goal game in the third period when Olexander Pobyedonostsev scored his first of the season, but Berlin held on and added an empty-net goal scored by Couture. Dion Phaneuf had an assist and 6 hits for the Smurfs.
Belfast 5, Edinburgh 2 – The Giants took a quick flight over the North Channel to Edinburgh and they then made quick work of the Capitals. One-time Giant Rick Nash scored the game’s first goal and later added an assist, but Belfast bombed Edinburgh for four second-period goals to wrest control. Ondrej Palat and Nazem Kadri each scored a goal and an assist for the Giants, while teammates Gabriel Bourque and Mikko Lehtonen had two assists apiece. Lehtonen was part of the deal that sent Nash out of Belfast. Before a truckload of stars disembarked in Belfast last season, Lehtonen was playing 15 minutes per game and he scored 43 points in his first year with the Giants. Last season, the Finn was used sparingly – just 5 minutes per game – and his point production fell to 15 points. He has 13 points so far this season.
Helsinki 7, Oslo 2 – Steve Downie scored a hat trick and added an assist and Thomas Vanek added two goals as the Jokerit erupted for 7 goals against visiting Oslo. For some reason, coach Barry Trotz is using Downie and not Alexander Radulov on the second powerplay unit and the strange move paid dividends against Oslo. Two of Downie’s three goals came with the man advantage and Helsinki ended up 4 of 6 on powerplays. After Downie, the next highest scorers in the game were Eliezer Sherbatov and Derek Roy, who both had 3 points. Helsinki defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo had 5 hits but got dinged up and is likely to miss a few games. Matt Niskanen had 5 hits for the Outlaws.
