Moscow 5, Gothenburg 0 – The Bare Bear Brawlers dominated on Friday, with the line of Anze Kopitar, Blake Wheeler and Max Pacioretty leading the way. Kopitar and Pacioretty each had a goal and an assist. Moscow’s Ryan Suter ended with 5 shots and a goal. As a team, Moscow is currently third-best in the league in both shots for and shots against per game. Gothenburg’s Adam Henrique has been one of the team’s – and league’s – best players for more than a year now and he finished with 7 shots, 4 hits and a blocked shot. Jaroslav Halak made 21 saves to earn his second shutout of the season.
Athens 2, Milan 1 (shootout) – Alex Stalock nearly stole a game in Athens. The young goalie made 45 saves in the game and stopped the first three shooters in the shootout. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t get much help from his friends. Michael Ryder scored on Stalock for the first goal of the game in the first period, and then in the third, Milan’s Thomas Hickey tied it with a shot through a crowd in front of the Greek net. Dustin Byfuglien was the only player of 8 to score in the shootout.
Paris 3, Lisbon 2 (OT) – Corey Perry scored during the first shift in overtime to win in a difficult building. Lisbon emerged from the first period with a 2-1 lead but got into a little penalty trouble in the second period, opening the door enough for Perry, Alex Semin and Evgeny Malkin to work a nice scoring play. Perry and Malkin each ended with a goal and an assist in the game. Alex Steen had a goal and 5 shots to lead Lisbon.
Zurich 3, Dublin 2 – The Lions trailed 2-0 at home halfway through the game, but Patrice Bergeron helped them complete the full comeback. The veteran center scored a shorthanded goal late in the second period to tie the score and in the third period, he scored a powerplay goal with 11:49 remaining and that was the last goal of the game. Zurich outshot Dublin 30-20. Evander Kane and T.J. Galiardi scored for the Irish. Bergeron and Ilya Kovalchuk have been consistently good offensively for Zurich this season. Both average more than a point per game and they are far ahead of everyone else on the team in shots on goal. Their minus 15 plus-minus rating leaves a lot to be desired, however.
Minsk 2, Bern 1 – The Bears’ powerplay units let them down in the first period and the Hussars were good enough to come up with the only goal of the period and the only goal of the second period. Bern had a 5-on-3 man advantage and three other powerplays in the first period but were shutout by goalie Carey Price and Minsk’s penalty killers. Nick Spaling and Jordan Staal scored for the Hussars and the home team didn’t get one past Price until Lance Bouma scored with a little over 5 minutes remaining. Brent Seabrook of Bern had 4 shots, 6 hits and 3 blocked shots to turn in a good individual performance. Minsk has now won 8 of their last 10 games and after a slow start are suddenly in third place in the Northern Conference.
Berlin 5, Madrid 2 – Southern Conference-leading Berlin won by 3 goals in Madrid. After Madrid erased a 2-0 Berlin and tied the game midway through the second period, Berlin got two powerplay goals to pull ahead for good. David Krejci of Berlin led all scorers with 2 goals and an assist. Smurf defensemen Matt Carle and Alexander Edler each scored a goal and they combined for a total of 12 hits in the game. Gabriel Landeskog was Madrid’s best player, producing a goal, an assist and the third star of the game honor. Krejci and Berlin teammate Loui Eriksson are both among the top 10 scorers in the league at the moment.
