Stockholm 5, Helsinki 4 – Helsinki put in 3 powerplay goals, but with a 4-1 lead, they allowed Stockholm’s penalty killers to score two goals in about 30 seconds and that gave the Eagles enough momentum to eventually tie and overtake the Jokerit. The shorthanded unit of Zach Bogosian, Olli Maatta, Colin Greening and Sean Monahan provided the key moments with Monahan and then Greening scoring goals. Bogosian ended with 2 assists, 5 hits, 2 blocked shots and he was plus 3. Chad Johnson got the start in goal for Helsinki to rest Henrik Lundquist. Alexander Radulov experienced a slight groin pull and will be off the Jokerit’s top line for a few games.
Prague 4, Oslo 1 – The Outlaws out-shot Prague 31-24 but Niko Hovinen turned in a great goaltending display to earn his Prague team the win. Eleven different Prague players scored at least a point, with Aleksey Bykov leading everyone in points with a goal and an assist. The little Russian winger has 3 goals and 11 points this year and he won’t come anywhere near the 26 goals and 58 points he produced last season, but his plus-minus rating is much better than it was then. Mikhail Grabovski and Matt Irwin of Oslo were their team’s best players, as they combined for 12 hits and 6 shots on Hovinen.
Bratislava 3, London 1 – Strong goaltending from Corey Crawford helped the Eagles with their 5th straight game and their third without injured captain Jonathan Toews. Martin Hanzal played a large role in the game as he set up one goal, had 5 hits and blocked 3 London shots for Crawford. Bratislava had just 19 shots on goal but were able to score 3 times with forwards Marian Hossa, Tyler Toffoli and Milan Gulas doing the honors. Taylor Hall of London seems to be trying to make up for lost time as he now has 4 goals and 5 penalties in 5 games. He has only played in 4 games since being injured on opening day.
St. Petersburg 4, Munich 0 – The German team will hate coming back to St. Petersburg after what the Red Stars did to them Thursday. St. Petersburg out-shot Munich 52-11 while jumping out to a 3-0 first-period lead. Dire Wolf goalie Cory Schneider had one game to rest up and after stopping 48 shots in St. Pete’s barrage, he’ll need another breather. Vladimir Sobotka scored the game’s first two goals in the contest’s first 5:08. Brad Richards and Valtteri Filppula each scored one goal and had 8 shots for Petrograd. Munich’s best player was Francois Beauchemin, who dished out 7 hits and blocked 6 shots in 29 minutes of ice time.
Belfast 5, Copenhagen 2 – Cody Hodgson broke a 2-2 tie in the second period to give visiting Belfast its first lead of the game and Alexander Ovechkin added two scoops of icing on the cake with a pair of third-period goals against his former team. He now has 13 goals this season, putting him tied for 4th in the league. He is also tied for 5th in scoring. The game was close with Copenhagen out-shooting Belfast 33-31. Both teams had 6 powerplay chances and both played their backup goalies, with Cam Talbot of the Giants outperforming the Tridents’ Andres De La Garma.
Geneva 6, Edinburgh 5 – A close game was won in the third period when the Generals’ Sergei Kostitsyn scored his 11th goal of the season to tie it and David Desharnais scored his 5th to win it. Defenseman Luke Schenn scored a pair of goals for Edinburgh and he was named the game’s first star. Scott Conway, an English teen-ager playing in his first game ever, scored a goal and had an assist for Edinburgh playing with veterans Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Bryan Bickell. Geneva’s Marian Gaborik led all scorers in the game with 1 goal and 2 assists. He and Erik Cole share the team lead in scoring, but Kostitsyn, rookie Sergei Mozyakin, and Desharnais are right behind them.
