London 5, Zurich 2 – After Brandon Saad put London up 2-1, Zurich came onto the ice for the third period trying to tie the contest. But London forwards Devin Setoguchi and Jeff Skinner sabotaged that plan with two goals 1 minute and 22 seconds apart. London’s points were divvied up between 12 different players. Alex Killorn and Jussi Jokinen scored for the Lions. London has won 8 of its last 10 games and the Dons will make a short trip north to play in Edinburgh today. Zurich has dropped 4 of their last 5 games.
Dublin 4, Gothenburg 0 – Brian Elliott shut out the Devils in a game that was closer than the score indicated. The shots on goal were nearly even and until there was 14 minutes left in the game, Keith Yandle’s goal was the only one of the day. Then Dublin’s ace forward unit of Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel and Evander Kane struck hard, netting three goals, one by each man.
Minsk 5, Lisbon 4 – Minsk dominated in shots on goal, 44-20, and won the game, but only by one goal. Lisbon goalie Karri Ramo kept his team in it, especially in the second period when the Hussars out-shot Lisbon 24-3. There was only one goal in that period and it was Nick Spaling’s first of the season for Minsk. Six seconds into the third period, Lisbon veteran David Legwand tied the game at 3-3, but Minsk pulled ahead by two on goals by Mark Giordano and Patrick Kane. Girodano and Kane were among 6 Hussars who scored 2 points in the game. Lisbon’s big line was minus 1, but defenseman Shea Weber was good, scoring twice and adding an assist.
Athens 4, Geneva 1 – Jason Pominville scored the first two goals of the game and Athens goalie Cam Ward outdueled his counterpart, Frederik Andersen, in a game that saw each team pepper the other’s net with 38 shots. Greek defenseman Dustin Byfuglien scored a goal and led everyone in shots with 5 and hits with 4.
Moscow 4, Stockholm 0 – Moscow goalie Jaroslav Halak made 29 saves to earn his first shutout of the season. The Bare Bear Brawlers, which is Moscow’s new and disturbing nickname, got two goals from the league’s top gunner, Blake Wheeler. Wheeler, who came to Moscow along with Ryan Suter in a trade with Gothenburg during the off-season, now has 16 goals in 19 games, putting him 3 ahead of second-place Sidney Crosby of Belfast. Olli Maatta returned to the Eagles lineup Tuesday, but the team’s best players were Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, who had 6 shots each on Halak.
Prague 4, Berlin 2 – After one period, it looked like Prague was going to lose another game and Berlin was going to win again. After all, that had been the trend in the last two weeks for the two teams. But Wolf Pack coach Patrick Roy must have hit all the right notes in his talk to the team during the first intermission when the score was Berlin 2, Prague 0. Sparked by Andrej Sekera’s shorthanded goal – his first tally of the season – Prague went on a march that saw them tie and then pass the Smurfs. Andrey Bykov and Nail Yakupov also scored in the second period for Prague and goalie Ryan Miller shut out Berlin on all 14 of their shots after period 1. Prague center Jason Spezza seemed to have injured his right leg or hip and played sparingly over the final period or so and he has been declared injured for the next few Wolf Pack games.
