Geneva 3, Gothenburg 2 (shootout) – Geneva veteran Nick Foligno has been extra cantankerous this week. On Tuesday, he got a roughing penalty and then got into a fight in St. Petersburg, and on Thursday, in front of the home crowd, he got into another tussle, this time with Devil tough guy Frazier McLaren. Those two lead the league in fighting majors this year, Foligno with 4 and McLaren with 3. Foligno also got an important rally going for the Generals. Geneva trailed 2-0 with 12 minutes left when Foligno banged puck-carrying Jordan Eberle into the boards, grabbed the puck and got it up to linemate Rickard Wallin. Wallin then made a pretty pass to Mike Fisher who scored the first General goal on Pekka Rinne. Eight minutes later, Nikita Nikitin blasted a slapshot past Rinne and it was tied 2-2. Eberle and Alec Martinez scored Gothenburg’s goals.
Moscow 3, Lisbon 1 – Alexander Salak but in a great performance, especially in the third period when Lisbon was outshooting Moscow 14-2, to help Spartak win on Portugese ice. Neither of the teams’ top forward lines provided any offense Thursday. Jannik Hansen, who entered the game with one goal this season for Spartak, scored the first two of the game and fourth-liner Steve Bernier added his second of the season. Lisbon’s young defense tandem of Sami Vatanen and Seth Jones were victimized twice by Hansen and company. Lisbon’s lone goal on Salak came from David Legwand on a second-period powerplay. Moscow blueliners Jason Garrison and Ryan Suter blocked 7 shots between them.
St. Petersburg 5, Edinburgh 4 – Nearly 15,000 Edinburgh fans were treated to a fast-paced game, but their team came out on the short end. Edinburgh outshot the Red Stars 40-37, including 24-10 in the third period, but they just could squeeze an equalizing goal past goalie Antti Niemi. Claude Giroux was a whirlwind for the Capitals in a losing effort. The veteran scored two goals and set up two others. St. Petersburg’s most effective offensive players were Brad Richards and Valtteri Filppula, who each had a goal and an assist. Wayne Simmonds assisted on two Red Star goals, while Viktor Stalberg led the team in shots (6) and scored one the 3 powerplay goals St. Petersburg scored against the league’s third-best penalty killing team.
Milan 4, Prague 1 – Trevor Daley’s name wasn’t called when the three stars of the game were announced, but it should have been. The 32-year-old Guerriero defenseman blocked 5 shots and dished out 5 hits. Coming off a groin injury, Daley has played only 9 games this season, but he has 5 points and is a plus 5. Milan played a very balanced game on Thursday, getting goals from four different players and taking just one penalty. Defenseman Andrew MacDonald has 2 assists for the Guerriero and Tyler Johnson had a goal and an assist.
Stockholm 6, London 2 – Bobby Ryan and Jeff Carter gave the Dons more they could handle Thursday in Sweden. The linemates each scored a goal in the game’s first 3 minutes and Ryan added one more in the second period. Carter led the Eagles in shots with 5 and hits with 6. Colin Greening and Karl Alzner each had 2 assists. London probably has the fastest forwards in the league, but on Thursday, speed didn’t kill. The top line of Daniel Sedin, Jeff Skinner and Michael Grabner had a bad day, as did backup goalie Michal Neuvirth. Sedin and Skinner were minus 5 in the game, while Grabner was minus 4. The win makes Stockholm’s home record 5-1-2 this season and the Eagles are currently in fifth place in the Northern Conference and in second place in the Kharlamov Division.
Zurich 4, Madrid 3 – Third-period goals by Patrice Bergeron and Jakub Voracek gave Zurich revenge for Madrid’s win the night before. The away team won both games in the home-and-home series. Ilya Kovalchuk had assists on both third-period goals and he was the only player on either team with more than one point. Jussi Jokinen of the Lions didn’t score a point, but he led his team in hits with 4 and he won 15 of 19 draws. Madrid’s best player was big wing Chris Stewart, who scored his 3rd goal of the season, had 4 shots and 2 blocked shots.
