Oslo 7, Paris 4 – Alex Pietrangelo is picking up right where he left off after winning Player of the Year honors in the EURO League’s Season 4. The Paris Rouge Eiffels star scored points at just under one per game last year (81 points in 82 games) and this year he has 16 points and 7 goals in 15 games. He leads all EURO defensemen in scoring and goals. His plus-minus rating is lagging at -2, but that’s the only part of his game that isn’t excellent. Along with Season 3 MVP Evgeny Malkin and the rest of his teammates, Paris is again at the top of the Southern Conference. They are tied with surprising Madrid at 25 points in 15 games and that puts both teams in a tie for second place overall in the league, one point behind Belfast. On Monday, Pietrangelo and Paris had a bad day. He and defense partner Kris Letang were minus 3 and the team lost 7-4 to Oslo. Tuukka Rask was in goal for all 7 goals on 27 Oslo shots. The most effective Outlaw was Tyler Seguin, who scored two goals and had two assists. Tyler Kennedy contributed 3 assists, Tomas Hertl got another goal for Oslo, his 8th of the season, and three Outlaws registered their first goals of the season: Guillaume Latendresse, Matt Irwin and Morgan Rielly.
Lisbon 6, Dublin 3 – John Tavares, Steven Stamkos and Alex Steen were a fearsome forward line Monday, out-shining Dublin’s famed top line of Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel and Evander Kane. Tavares took the league scoring lead with his 4-point performance that included a goal and 3 assists. Steen and Stamkos scored 2 goals apiece. Kesler and Kane scored for Dublin. Lisbon has been winning with regularity lately and they have leapfrogged over four teams into 5th place in the South. Dublin, meanwhile, remains in 3rd place in the Northern Conference. Dublin’s improvement this season seems to be linked to new goalie Brian Elliott, 30, who is currently ranked second in the league in goals against and third in save percentage.
Milan 4, Zurich 1 – The Lions made a short trip south Monday, over the Alps and into Northern Italy, but they forgot to pack their goal-scoring sticks. Alex Stalock, the Guerriero’s goalie, stopped 29 Zurich shots and his teammates built a 4-0 lead by the time the third period began. Nicklas Danielsson was the only player in the game to score more than one point as he had assists on goals by Tyler Johnson and Kyle Okposo. T.J. Brennan and Jaden Schwartz also scored for Milan, while defenseman Lucas Sbisa delivered a game-high 6 hits. Jussi Jokinen scored the only Lions goal, his seventh of the season on powerplay. Milan is now 4-3 at home, but they have yet to win a game on the road. The Guerriero will play host to the Berlin Smurfs tonight.
Berlin 6, Bern 1 – The league’s best goalie gave up just one goal, but Jimmy Howard had tons of Smurfy help on Monday in Berlin. Through 13 games, Howard has monstrous numbers: a 93.6 save percentage and a miniscule 1.75 goals against average. Berlin is 7th in the league in shots against, giving up on average of 27.9 per game. They only allowed 19 shots by Bern. Ryan Callahan scored 2 first-period goals and the Smurfs were leading 4-1 midway through the second period when Dion Phaneuf of Berlin scored his 2nd and 3rd goals of the season to put the game out of reach. Phaneuf and Logan Couture, who had 3 assists, were both plus 3.
Athens 4, Helsinki 1 – In a game that featured 15 penalties including a checking from behind major for each club, Athens won easily. They outshot the visiting Jokerit 43-15. T.J. Oshie had 10 shots on goal for the Greeks and finished with a goal and an assist. Ryan O’Reilly assisted on two goals and he leads the league in assists with 16 in 15 games. Athens is currently 5th in the league overall, but they are only third in the Demitra Division. Helsinki is tied with Gothenburg and Edinburgh in the 7-8-9 position in the North. Athens defenseman Staffan Kronwall was injured on Monday to continue what has been a bad year for the 21-year-old so far. After three straight seasons of scoring 30 points or more, Kronwall has just 1 point through 15 games and he’s a minus player for the first time in his career. Helsinki’s Jared Cowen knows how he feels. After three seasons of scoring between 12 and 17 points, Cowen is still looking for point number one, and he’s a minus 10 with nearly twice as many giveaways as takeaways. The Jokerit would benefit if Cowen can turn his game around.
Madrid 3, Gothenburg 1 – Coach Dan Bylsma has his Madrid Royals playing the best hockey they ever have and they currently find themselves one point behind league-leading Belfast. They have won 4 straight and 8 of their last 10 games and on Monday, Gothenburg was their victim. Madrid outshot the Devils 33-25 in Spain, with Derek Stepan, Gabriel Landeskog and Lee Stempniak scoring the goals and Jonas Hiller stopping all but one of Gothenburg’s shots. Big Chris Stewart had 2 assists for the winners and Erik Karlsson played 29 minutes and blocked 4 Devil shots. Dan Girardi scored for Gothenburg. Stepan is leading Madrid in scoring with 19 points, which places him tied for 8th in the league. Madrid and Zurich will battle in a home-and-home series on Wednesday and Thursday.
