8 salaries decided by arbitrators

When player agents and team officials can’t agree on a player’s salary, an arbitrator has to be called in to make the decision. That happened 8 times in the EURO League tonight. Four of the eight arbitration contracts were awarded to goalies.

Berlin and Athens each had two cases go to arbitration. The Smurfs were ordered to pay 29-year-old Tony Martensson $3.52 million, and 29-year-old Ladislav Smid $2.44 million. Martensson has scored 30, 25 and 24 goals in three seasons with Belfast and Berlin. Said was a full-time player during Season 1, but a bench warmer since. Last season, he got into 19 games.

Athens was ordered to pay reserve defenseman Theo Peckham $1.39 million and backup goalie Richard Bachman $2 million.

The champs got a little closer to the salary cap than they wanted when they and backup goalie Devan Dubnyk couldn’t reach a deal. An arbitrator awarded Dubnyk $3.66 million. He only played in 15 games last season and none in the long playoff run.

A busier backup goalie from Lisbon, 29-year-old Jan Laco, was awarded $2.71 million. Lack has appeared in 112 career games and has a 89.1 save percentage.

The fourth goalie to go to arbitration is Eddie Lack, whose next game for Madrid will be his first ever in the league. Still, he has earned a $2.07 million paycheck.

Paris left winger Josef Vasicek, a regular on the team for the last three seasons with a +87 rating, will get more than Paris GM Ralph Booth wanted to pay him, at $3.62 million. Vasicek is an ironman of sorts, having played in 82 games in each of his seasons and he has scored 20 or more goals twice.

All arbitration contracts are one-season deals.

Unrestricted free agents will be presented offers from now until 10:30 EST Sunday night, when they will simultaneously announce which teams they have decided to play for in Season 5.
